They do both, it kinda depends on what state and city you live in. Some will make you blow into that little straw thing, and others will make you do the tests (saying the alphabet backwards, walking a straight line heel to toe, standing on one foot, touching your nose with your finger, or the watch the pen test)

One of my friends' car was hit very badly by a driver who went through a red light, she was not injured, but she expected the cop to do the breath test on the other driver and he didn't, he said it was not necessary (?). So, not all cops do their job well.

They are used in Michigan. I think each state has to make their own determination whether to use them or not.

typically they have this little thing you breath into that examines your breath to see what your alcohol level is.
