If you don't have an eternal self, and eternal identity then death is the end for you. There would then be no after life.

If you believe that you have an eternal identity, an eternals self, then who is the first identity, the first self?

Of course we do! We are actually eternal spiritual beings in quality one with God, we are His eternal emanations, His part and parcel. We are not these bodies! We are not male, female, American, Indian, human, animal.
The explanation of my answer is that detailed information about our eternal identity is given in the ancient Vedic scriptures. It is described there that we all have our eternal identities, full of knowledge and full of bliss, in the spiritual world as the eternal loving servants of Supreme Lord. For us as spiritual beings there is no suffering or misery, there is no death, old age or disease. But because currently we are entrapped in this material body, we are afflicted by so many miseries. However, by the help of realized person, a bonafide spiritual master, we can also awaken our eternal identity and stop all our suffering.

Well, let's assume for a second that we do indeed have a "soul." I believe that, but it's an article of faith, something I see when I look inside myself or in my daughter's eyes.

The idea of a stable eternal identity, though, seems kind of problematic. I think my soul can grow (or shrink) and change along with my life experiences. In fact, I think life here on earth may be designed as a ground where my eternal identity and eternal self can change. Thus, the soul isn't eternal in the sense of being an unchanging core of our being, but is always a moving manipulable target.

Don't know.

More probably an eternal identity. Less probably an eternal self. This is because self is comprised of many things that are earth-only. That is, in eternity, would we really need to have memorized the nutrition data from a packet of Skittles? Seems this kind of knowledge would drop away when no longer needed. Moreover, self contains mechanisms and skills that are only relevant to life on a temporal plane--things like fear of the unknown. In eternity, presumably one would know, and therefore stuff like fear of the unknown would drop away.

Yeah man i believe in the bible, and according to it we have an eternal identity but that can only be ''activated'' after you lived this live.See i believe that the flesh goes back into the ground were it came from, but the spirit returns to the almighty GOD who is the creator of heaven and earth....../and only there will you pend eternity(your eternal self definitely!!!!!)GOD is holy and righteous, and he promises eternal life to those who obey him and do his will!!!!!!!PEACE

No we don't. Concept of eternal self exists only in the mind as a pathetic way to try to avoid facing the finality of death.

I believe so. Based on what I've read of near death experiences which of course do not provide concrete scientific evidence I believe that our purpose is to grow and develop spiritually while still retaining our own unique identities and free will in order that we can become companions of God.

why does there need to be a first outside of all of us, (however I do believe in creation and that I did not personally always exist) but why not? Is there something to not looking at time in a straight line? yes I believe in an initial creator. but can oneness with that creator be a confusion ( not a bad thing ) a continual dividing of that one. I am a puppeteer but I don't believe that that one in any way desires domination, but oneness with diversity and self determination. for me if not there truly is no point.

thanks how'v ya been

yes, I believe we are all eternal because the Bible says those who belong to Jesus will spend eternity with Him in Heaven, and those who reject Him will spend an eternity in the lake of fire. Nobody gets out of eternity.

The great law of this reality can be summed up like this: "All is Impermanent and without Self." No self.
