If you want to stay in Arlington itself, avoid the chains--- there is so much more to see and do there!

For shopping, check out the Clarendon neighborhood (near the Clarendon Metro). It's very pedestrian-friendly and you'll find all sorts of shops, ranging from big, nationwide stores like Bed Bath and Beyond to small independant bookstores and antique shops.

For nightlife, don't miss Iota--- their food is great and reasonably priced, and after dinner step next door to their bar area where most nights you can catch a local band or an indie act. That's on Wilson Blvd. There's also Galaxy Hut and Rhodeside Grille nearby, both very fun places to stop in and have a beer.

For the ultimate in dive casual dining, Bob and Edith's on Columbia Pike is the best diner in town. Their hash browns rock!

Or try Queen Bee on Washington and Wilson (or thereabouts) for great Vietnamese--- there's other great Vietnamese and Thai places right in that strip.

Basically if you jump off the Metro at Clarendon, you can walk a mile or more in either direction (up or down the hill) and have about a million great restaurants, coffee shops and bars to pick from! Enjoy!

For not to be missed local food, you must go to Ben's Chili Bowl !
Metro Green line to U st.. exit on the 13th Street side.. and its across the Street
Ben's Chili Bowl
1213 U Street, N.W.

"The one dish unique to Washington, DC: a half-smoke. They are sold from street carts throughout the city, but there's none better than the one you get at Ben's. The sound of biting into one, as juices burst, is almost as good as the taste."

Go to Adams-Morgan/Dupont Circle in the DC area. They have a lot of neat coffee shops and eateries. I also like going to Union Station and eating there as well as browsing. The shopping is a tad bit expensive at Union Station, but it's nice to look around. Otherwise, I'd check out some websites or a travel book at the bookstore.

Arlington has tons of good places to eat and shop. For eating, go to Clarendon and walk around. There are tons of places, of every kind. I like Mexicali Blues on Wilson BLVD. Great south american food.
