My boss is Jewish and I don't want to offend him or his family. Can someone please tell me what they eat and don't eat. I would also like to know why please.

No pork, no shellfish; have to make sure all produce is entirely free of insects (tough, if you buy organic). If you've eaten a milk meal, you can't eat a meat meal for 1 hour; if you eat a meat meal you can't eat a milk meal for six hours. Beef can be kosher, but only certain parts, only if the animal was 100% healthy (no scaring on internal organs indicating a previous serious illness), and only if it is killed in a specially prescribed manner that minimizes pain to the animal. Meat and milk rules are very complex, because most foods in the US that are not meat still have small quantities of meat products (meat bi-products are the basis of most flavorings). According to Jewish law, that is still meat.

ps. We do eat meat on friday; in fact it is strongly encouraged in order to make the sabbeth more festive.

If you are thinking of inviting your boss over for dinner or taking him out to dinner, here are a couple points to consider: if they are very religious, your only real choice is to take them to a kosher restaurant, if there is one in your City. You can't cook kosher food at your house. Kosher, BTW, is a term meaning that the food meets the Jewish dietary laws. If they are moderately religious they might be willing to eat at a restaurant (or your house) but restrict themselves to vegetarian dishes (although this is not kosher, it is a fairly common compromise among less religious Jews). If they are reform or not religious, they probably can eat anywhere, but will just not eat pork or shellfish.

they CANNOT mix meat and dairy within 6 hours of each other, and this means they cannot eat meat on a dish that has ever touched dairy and vice versa. also no pork and no shellfish. thats probably all you will have to worry about.
