I need to get more diapers, but since she did go in the potty, even though it was only once so far, do I just start buying pull-ups or even panties instead of diapers? I'm not sure if it's a good idea to keep her in diapers. Would that send her mixed signals or what? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Not yet. Wait until it becomes a pattern. Pull-ups do not hold near the capacity of diapers.

My suggestion as a mother of 2 daughters is not to rush it because you may get disappointed. It's a first she's learning what to do that's great however if the pressure is put on it may go good for a while but she could go backwards and that's where you may get frustrated. I would wait for pull-ups until about 20 months or so. She still needs to learn how to go poop in the potty, thats the hard part. Trust me, cleaning a dirty diaper is much easier than a dirty pull-up. Pull-ups can come out the sides of her bottom, not a fun clean up. Just give it a few more months and she will be more aware of when she's going and how to control it. I've seen so many parents push then they regret it. Take things slow, make special times for her to sit down and go potty. I.E. in the morning after she wakes up, before naps, and at bathtime after you've changed her diaper and she's clean, allow her to sit down and try. Atleast then you'll be getting her into a routine. Once you have the routine established then try pull-ups.
I wish you the best of luck!

Forget the pull-ups, they are nothing more than diapers without tapes to hold them on.

If she is really ready to potty train then don't give her the wrong signal by putting her in pants that allow her to wet them like a diaper. Put her in a nice pretty pair of panties that she likes and wants to wear and then tell her she is a big girl and she shouldn't ruin her new panties by going potty in them.

Work with her, make sure she gets to the bathroom very regularly so she really doesn't have a chance to use her panties to pee in. Praise her a lot when she uses the potty like she is supposed to.

Good luck.

I and many of my colleagues are not big fans of Pull Ups for many reasons. The first is that they are just glorified diapers! The second is that they cost a fortune! In all honesty, your little one is likely not ready to make the switch yet. It will not confuse her to stay in diapers. Keep her in diapers until she is twenty months, and then buy the good old-fashioned thick training underwear. Take a weekend at home, put the potty in an accessible place, and leave her in just a tshirt and her undies. Remind her after meals and when she is fidgety to sit on the potty. She will learn how awful it feels to go in her panties, and with this method, many kids are almost completely trained within weeks.

It's said that once you go to pull ups you should not go back to regular diapers, so it is very important that you know that she is seriously potty training or if it was just a one time thing she did for fun. My son did it a few times then stopped so I thought potty training had begun but it had not actually.
Also, 17 months is quite early the nerve endings don't develop really until 18 months, these nerves allow the brain to know when they have to pee or not so that it can be controlled.
I would say wait a week or so if she keeps progressing then switch if she drops it then it's good that you didn't jump the gun.

well girls do tend to learn faster. That is a good sign though but i wouldnt do panties but do the pull ups because then she can feel that she is wet and it wont ruin her outfits if she does not make it to the potty. I would try the pull ups maybe for a week or two and see how she does. If she does really well keep buying them and if she does not then just try it again but do not complety go away from the potty just let her now that it is still there so she knows. just remeber it is still early so do not push too hard which you do not seem to be doing so you are doing a great job.
well good luck to you.

Yes, pull-ups are great. My nephew is 22 months and he is wearing pull-ups and going to the potty. Continue to use both the diapers and pull-ups. I use the pull-ups during the daytime for my nephew and the diapers at night. Good luck!

i dont have any kids, but if you remove the diapers, she will get the hint that from now on, she has to pee in the toilet, not on her undies. If you keep using diapers i think it would send mixed signals, like you can pee in ur undies when u have the diapers on, so when she doesnt have it on, she will pee. i think.

try not using the diapers, just undies , for a couple of days if she pees on herself, she needs to go back to pull ups, but dont get pull ups until she gets the feeling of using undies on her own. that will help her to mature faster as well and think about what she is doing and how she should react to her body's signals. .

Diapers for the night, pull-ups by day, and underwear for 1-2 hours each afternoon - ask if she needs to go potty every ten minutes and insist that she try every half hour while wearing her big girl underpants. (If she's too young to answer audibly with a "yes" or a "no," she's too young to be potty training.)

She does look slightly youthful yet all toddlers are diverse. i might decide for the pull-ups. the only challenge is toddlers ought to have the skill to sense what the urge is formerly they're in a position to be potty knowledgeable. try giving her fairly some liquid whilst your interior the homestead and wait approximately 10 minutes. take a seat her on the bathroom and wait a whilst (if she's prepared to take a seat down that long) If she sits long sufficient she'll circulate pee whilst on the bathroom and that could instruct her how the urge ought to sense. save on doing this till she quite gets the belief. selection 2 in spite of the undeniable fact that is a splash harder yet this may be a commence.
