The Illuminati is the name of many groups, modern and historical, real and fictitious, verified and alleged. Most commonly The Illuminati refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment secret society. However, it often refers to a shadowy conspiratorial organization which is reputed to secretly control world affairs, usually a modern incarnation or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati. Illuminati is sometimes used synonymously with New World Order.

Since 'Illuminati' translates to 'enlightened ones' in Latin, it is natural that several unrelated historical groups have identified themselves as Illuminati. Often, this was due to claims of possessing gnostic texts or other arcane information not generally available.

The designation illuminati was in use from the 14th century by the Brethren of the Free Spirit. In the 15th century the name was adopted by other enthusiasts who claimed that the illuminating light came, not by communication from an authoritative or secret source, but from within, as the result of exalted consciousness, or "enlightenment".

Number one answer: They are a group of intellectual people who have gathered together texts of work (such as philosophy and science), and share this knowledge with only others of like minds (thus the "secret" society). Some people have been known to say these people are actually plotting to "take over the world". The original Illuminati did not have any sort of structure regarding a "supreme deity" but currently many groups do. It is believed that the Freemasons are an offshoot of the original Illuminati. (see more details in links 1 and 2)

Number two answer: A couple of Rock bands currently playing in the US and Canada. (see links 3 and 4 for more details)

I read about them in the book Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. Good book. From what the book says, they are a secret ancient group of scientists who think science had to do with the creation of everything. Religious churches didn't like them because they didn't want scientist proving that something was done by science instead of God.

This site doesn't mention anything about what I just said above....
