Yesterday, I had two really awkward conversations. I tried to talk to the new kid, and it totally ended up being really awkward, though he was quiet. Then, I had an OOC conversation with this guy I RP with, and he started replying with simple, "Cool," or "yea."

No, not at all! Some people just don't feel like talking. Sometimes they're not interested in what someone else has to say. (Which, in my opinion, is rude.) For any reason, it's their problem, not yours. You were being friendly and there's nothing stupid about that!
The first person you talked to was probably very shy and didn't know what to say. It's hard being the new kid. That you tried to talk to him tells me you're a nice person. And, in my limited experience with online RPGs (role-playing games, for those who don't know), most people that you will meet there don't want an OOC (out of character) relationship. (Though I could never understand that, really. I can't RP with anyone I don't know OOC. But that's just me.)

When you are chatting in a OCC(online chat something) RP (role playing) and are getting responses that are conversation killers (yeah, OK, lol, : )) you may have pushed things to the point where they have had enough and they choose not to be rude. Don't stop being yourself, but before you type something try and think about what you want to accomplish with the next statement. It will keep you from filling up time and space with conversation points that may be directed to an improper audience.
But the answer to your question is no you are not stupid......better to express an opinion that is not popular than to horde words like a miser.

Some people just like to talk and some people are more quiet, don't stress about it. Maybe the other guy had something on his mind? What is OOC?

sometimes I even feel like I talk way too much and end up feeling stupid. Some people just talk more than others
