He restored the German nation's self-belief that had been shattered by losing the First World War and then the Great Depression (6 million unemployed in Germany in 1932, a huge % of the workforce).

He was clever too, promising what people wanted to hear, and only introducing the nasty stuff (e.g. killing Jews and starting imperialist wars) so slowly that most German people didn't notice the horror of it until it was too late to stop it.

Hitler's appeal to the downtrodden and disaffected was comparable to the appeal of Islam to today's blacks in the West. Remember also the Bob Dylan line "the first ones now will later be last, for the times they are a changing"? Always a popular message with the underclass.

His appeal to the upper classes was to restore the lost glory of the Bismarck's reich. His appeal to the petty bourgeoisie was to restore morality (!) based on justice and doing down the "dirty jews who were manipulating the country". Plausible at the time.

All men are sinners and capable of doing anything. All men that have rejected what the Lord Jesus Christ did on the cross for them has the spirit of Satan. Romans 5: 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Ephesians 2: 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

The main reason is found at 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 which says:
"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works."
Satan indeed has ministers who mislead many, Hitler being one of them, and under Satan's influence, Hitler was able to deceive many into following him and helping him to persecute and kill God's people.
