..Isn't this supposed to be an 'enlightened' age, full of free information?..

Well, I'll put it to you this way....

When a survey was done to see how much of the population believed in evolution compared to creationism, and mind you this was done for the world, not just the USA... 60% of Americans came back as believing in creationism over evolution. Now as scary as that is, the even more scary part is that the only country (in the world that is) that had a higher % of idiots, was Turkey. All other countries in the world seem to be "enlightened" as you say, and believe in evolution more.

Blame it on the media, and a really poor school system.

*** Oh, and to Byron Arnold... do you really think these free people you talk about are coming to thier own conclusions? If that was the case, then there would be a helofa lot more Bhudist, Muslum, Jewish, Mythological, or just origional theories and converts happening would thier not? It's the most brillent marketing scheme ever, to make people think they are thinking freely!

Tom,
Don't be too surprised if the so-called "enlightened" are in one of those 'religions.' It's seems to me that there is an attraction to 'religion' because people are taking sides, which is to be expected.

In one sense, those taking sides are doing so because they have been slacking off in what they know to be as true, but unwilling to commit their life to it. Now that there is an ever present danger, i.e. Muslims, to threaten their daily lives, they foind commonality withing the ranks of Chistianity. While those that are of other faiths also can find news of Muslims killing those of their faiths in other countries, the Far Eastern religions included.

In another sense, these are the End Times. And there is a lot of pressure coming down right now. Many feel that these times are indicative of prophecy being fulfilled. The world has an army now, and the world has developed ther own sense of morals and sense of unity with even the Laws they live by.

Also, I thik, that it's fish or cut bait time. You either are on God's side, or you are on some other side. The time for the decision making is growing short. Some would refer to this as gloom and doom. I refer to it as the end of the earht as we know it, and finally the ways of things that men have done are coming to an end. I am relieved by that. It gives me hope that this will soon end, and I will be with my Lord.

Religion and information do not go together as shown here "not as many ppl go to church due to stress and business and alot of working I think but 85% of our population believes in God"

at a minimum 20% of Americans do not believe according to the 2000 census. If you are asinine to believe a 2000 year old book, why would you bother looking up facts?

Are you talking about organized religions being strong, or religious feelings being strong?

If the former, I'd say no. It was its strongest during the middle ages, when between Islam and Christianity, at least half the world was controlled by Religious dogma.

If the latter, I'd say "Yes!" People are free to come to their own conclusions as to what they believe, so they believe it more strongly!!!

Civilization does not always progress in an uninterrupted line. Sometimes there are retrogressions. We have been in one for about 35 years or so with the irrational resurgence of reactionary Fundamentalisms. It's a dysfunctional response to the dilemmas of modernity. I am doing what I can to thwart the retrograde course. I hope you are as well.

I hope not the purspose of my existence here and god told me once. He said i need to put a stop to all this ****. Down with faith down with organized religion. If jesus and mohammed could have seen what was done in thier name they would have given up and proceeded with ordinary lives only to be lost into obscurity.

No, it is making people more stupider and more ignorant than ever. Too many wars and crimes are committed under the name of religion.
