We got a "wolf" once from this Indian lady (not from India, but Native American). She gave us a recipe that is all natural and controls worms and fleas. White rice, chicken livers, carrots, baby cereal and garlic. You can just boil it all together in a big pot. Our dogs love it. Apparently the carrots aids in the worm control and garlic repels fleas. It don't smell so hot when you cook it, but it's a lot better than all the "crap" you get from store bought food. Besides, a 20 pound bag of complete natural dog food from the store can cost as much as $40 or more. If you have more than 1 dog to feed, you'll get to the poor house pretty quick.

My Evan was raised on a raw diet (raw chicken, beef bones, sweet potatoes, broccoli and salmon oil supplements). as a baby and is fed a food now with no grains: Wysong Synorgon diet. We mix it with a high quality food that contains some grain like Nutro ultra adult to keep his weight on since he is rather energetic for his age (7). With regular exercise and bathing, he is in wonderful condition and very healthy. He did ok on ProPlan but his coat and skin were dry so we switched a few years ago. I've heard of problems with Iams giving frequent urination and have observed dry coats (at least in my breed) with iams. Eukanuba and science diet are rather overpriced for what they are. However, I feed on a dog-by-dog basis according to what I observe works for them and what I feel they need.. I feed what works for a particular dog. Another good food is Natural balance. They also make an organic formula in dry dog food. I use the meat-rolls for training.

RAW!!!!! Seriously, dogs respond better to a raw diet than any other diet out there! www.thehonestkitchen.com The Honest Kitchen makes a dehydrated raw diet that you can use as a base for adding your own raw chicken, beef, or ground turkey. Just remember no pork!! Pork gives dogs intestinal problems.
Otherwise, if you don't want to deal with making the best food possible for your dog (it really doesn't take that long), I'd go with Nutro Ultra Holistic Formula. Best commercial food I've seen in a LONG time.

talk to your veterinarian about putting your critter on a raw diet. you can do research online for this as well. it will be more expensive and time consumptive but it will elongate your animals health and improve the quality if his life dramatically. 50 years ago when a family dog's main staple was table food scraps, their life span was about 50% longer than it is today as people stuff filler food commercial grade dog food down their poor animals' throats. A raw diet which is very natural and what they would basically eat if they were on their own , will naturally resolve many common issues that dogs suffer from. Dander, piggish behavior (starving dog syndrome), fleas, plaque, etc !

Aside from a raw diet the best food you could give your dog is Innova Evo. It is the closest thing to a raw diet you can get in dry dog food. The only carbohydrate is potatoes. There is a red meat diet and a white meat diet. The Min. Protein is 42%. Evo isn't recommened for puppies though, too much protein for them I think, for puppies just plain Innova. You could mix it with Innova canned food and it would be even better.

Home made is the best, but the least cost effective.

Canidae is good, but expensive (about $25 for a 20 pound bag).

Nature's Best (I think that's what it's called) is also goo, for lesser expensive, Eukanuba or Iams.

The more you spend on food now, the less you'll have to spend on vet bills down the road.

Dogs are mainly carnivores, but need some plant food as well. Try getting a dog food that is primarily meat with little vegetative matter in it. Most commercial dog foods are corn based with very little meat in them. There are several web sites who offer doggy stews with all natural human quality ingredients in them. Some people opt for raw meat diets as well, which you can get at your local butcher or order online.

petco recently started selling the organix brand of dog food, my dogs love it ,even when i give it to them dry without wet food they eat it alot more than other brands, ive noticed. it has all organic types of meats and no fillers at all like corn,
heres a website i found that has the ingredients:
http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Organix-Canine-Formula-Organic-Dog-Food/133001.aspx
the most important thing is to read the ingredients in dog food, dont buy naything that has corn in the first ingredients, or at all. corn goes right through your dog just like us.
solid gold, nutro, merrick are all good brands.
raw meat or an all meat diet like the guy said above are not good for your dog, cats need high protein diet but dogs need carbs, fats, veggies etc...

www.canidae.com/
All natural grade A ingredients, holistic, hypoallergenic, human grade, maintenance formula dog foods. Never tried it but it looks to be just what you are looking for.

If you like to cook you can find recipes online for making meatloaf for dogs and other foods and treats. Good Luck.

I feed my dog Hund-N-Flocken. Only place I've found decent, all natural food for my dog is a dog boutique. See if something like that is in your area. Innova is a good brand too.
