it's made of gum arabic, which is derived from tree sap. also, depending on the type of gum, it can have sucralose (like splenda) or sugar. don't forget the artificial flavoring and coloring!

Don't worry! it's not harmful if you swallow your gum every now and then. It will pass through your digestive system quickly.

I do know there is a plant called Indian chewing gum, which you can chew, but be careful- If it's out of season, the horrible aftertaste comes in about 10 seconds. Otherwise, I guess it's ok, but I tried it when it was out-of season. It actually is a plant though, you are literally chewing leaves. However, I balled it up in my jeans pockect and after the hike it smelled tropical...
