I went on a ride along, and though it was a month ago, I would like to thank the officer, and perhaps let his superviser know how well it went, and how much I appreciated the experience. I'm not sure who I should address the letter(s) to, or if it is even appropriate to send one. I appreciate responses from ppl in law enforcement..Thank you!

The best way to thank this officer would be to write a letter. In the world of law enforcement (yes it is a different type of life), a officer is going to hear more negative than he or she will hear positive. So each little thank you and each little note no matter how small or how big will be remembered. When you send the letter, make a copy for him/her, a carbon copy for his/her immediate supervisor (ie. Sgt. or Lt. ) then make a copy for the Chief or Sheriff depending on which type of department it is.
I also want to say thank you to you. Because I am sure that any other officer or deputy reading this is smiling and remembering one of their thank you letters..

you should send a thank you card or letter if you send a card make sure it's a professional looking card that may just say thank you on the front of it because if you go and get a card that is humorous or something as such it will make you look very unprofessional. I believe either would be sufficient and what you say does not have to be long. I don't think that you really need to let his supervisor know because he will know because of documentation and if he didn't hear anything bad he will assume it went as expected. Good luck

A letter to to his/her Chief is always a good idea. My boss will always throw a copy into our personnel files. You may want to send out more than one as well/ Maybe his Chief, one for the officer, and anyone else you think of. Sometimes town councils or Mayors will help the officer look good too.

You can send the letters to the station you rode out of, address one to the officer you rode with and then one to his immediate supervisor (Sgt)...you might want to include on the envelope which shift it was if you do not know the supervisor's name...like graveyard Sgt, (or day shift, swing shift)
It is always nice for the officers to get an "atta boy" and the supervisor should be aware that their officer did a good job also.
The officers supervisor will most likely send a copy to his supervisor (Lt.) for the officers permanent personnel file.

call the local office and ask who your particular officer works under (its usually a sergent that is the direct supervisor).send a letter to him a let him know how much you appriciated your ride along. Trust me, the officer will be shown the letter, and he will appreciate the extra time you took to actually write a thank you note.

I'm not the police but I use to mop their floors years ago and I can tell you that they love to get food any kind of food which was put out for the whole shift sometimes for all shifts. They don't make allot of money but they do like to eat good luck donuts or sandwiches or pizza works great!

I would hand deliver a thank you note to both the shift supervisor and the officer. Mail a letter to the Chief of Police about how great it was and thanks.
