Prime Minister selects and can dismiss other members of the cabinet, and allocates posts to members within the Government.
Prime Minister is the presiding head of the government
As well as being Head of Government, a prime minister may have other roles or titles—the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, for example, is also First Lord of the Treasury.

John Howard (Rudds predecessor) said exactly the same thing. And its the kind of common sense straight talking that i admire from Australians. The feeble British government would never say something like that as under multiculturalism we cant. Its only been a few years since we gave up on intergration and replaced it with diversity. And ive no doubt this wont make the British news as every native Brit will be calling for our government to say the same thing. It seems that everyone commenting on this issue is not in some multicultural induced dream-state and is aware of the problems and how weak our government is. But lets do something about it people and not just talk, general election in a few months - and i dont mean just vote tory.

A Prime Minister is essentially the same as a President except that he is usually elected differently -- by the parliament rather than by general election. The actual process varies slightly among governments, but those governments usually have more than two parties and thus the PM is chosen as the representative of a coalition of parties.

In a monarchy, such as Great Britain, the PM also reports to the king/queen, but, as he/she is elected by parliament, the PM also reports to that legislative body directly more often than the US president (Remember that in America, the VP is the president of the senate). Other than that, he/she presides over a Cabinet (of ministers rather than secretaries, just different title) that forms the Executive branch of the government. I believe the PM can initiate legislation, but it has to be approved by parliament, just as with the US President and Congress.

In the parliamentary system, the role of Vice President is usually taken by the candidate with the second most votes; thus he/she represents the 'loyal opposition'.

PM dont do any thing. he consults his army of advisors on each topics and prepares their suggestions as speech (helped by his PA). Main responsibilities also includes to consult with his ministers (who themselves get information from burocrates). But political party or PM should provide directions for major policy shifts (like nuclear deal etc.)

A PM, such as Tony Blair (bastard...), in a Parlimentary Monarchy (I believe thats England, or Parlamentary Democracy), for all intents and purposes, runs the country.

Like any other politician, he does as little as possible except look after his own best interests to the complete detriment of the country's citizens.
