Long before the British Mandate, the Romans conquered this area and they named the area Palestine.
The land has always had Jews living there. We hear of the Babylonians carrying the Jews off to Babylon. They only took some, and many were left. That is something people should remember-------Jews have always been there.

What you were told is correct. But the Jews had to pay the price of their greed and misrule thousands of years after Moses, and not keeping their God's Commandments. The Romans conquered the territory in the 1st century BCE and in 66AD (or maybe it was 70AD) they sacked Jerusalem and made the Jews scatter to all parts of their empire. The people who were not Jews and carried on living there became the ancestors of today's Palestinians.

No land was given to anyone by any deity. The Israelites had just lived in the same place so long that they naturally decided that the land belonged to them by divine mandate. Later on Islam came and kicked them out claiming that the land was theirs by divine mandate...after all, the Israilites didn't have it anymore, they did.
It's as stupid as the notion of "Manifest Destiny" that gripped the early American colonists. An excuse, nothing more.

It was renamed by the Roman emperor Hadrian, using the name of an extinct tribe (the Philistines) that used to live there. This was done to enrage the Jews -- and it worked.
Unfortunately, the name stuck, giving the pseudo-Palestinians (who are really Syrians and Egyptians) a name.
