1,000,000 english words up to 2,000,000 (see below)
David Crystal, in the Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, suggests that there must be at least a million words in the language. Tom McArthur, in the Oxford Companion to the English Language, comes up with a similar figure. David Crystal further says that if you allow all scientific terms the total could easily reach two million (this doesn’t count the formal names for organisms I spoke about earlier, just technical vocabulary).
Approximately 600,000 in the normal vocabulary English language.

In what language, please?
Do you have any idea how many languages there are?
Some languages are almost extinct (unused because the people have been assimilated into other cultures) , are you counting those also?
What about pictographs which were used in some anchient languages? Are you going to count them also?
