It's been almost 16 years, but I still remember basic training. They basically own you from 5:00 in the morning until 9:00 at night. They tell you what to do and how to do it, and they yell at you when you get it wrong. It's rough, but it's all a mind game. The main goal of basic training is to get you to stop thinking of yourself all the time and learn to work together with the other guys in your flight as a team. When I went through, basic training was only six weeks long, but I've heard they're going to make it nine weeks long. So be prepared to have someone wearing a Smokey Bear hat on your case from sunup until sundown for nine weeks. The keys to making it through with as little muss and fuss as possible are: (1) Keep your mouth shut, (2) Listen to what they tell you very closely, (3) Keep your mouth shut, (4) Learn what they want you to learn, (5) Keep your mouth shut, (6) Pay attention to every single detail, (7) Keep your mouth shut, (8) Put your personal difference aside and work with the others in your flight, even if you don't like them, and (9) Keep your mouth shut.

AF Basic training seemed very difficult at the time and there were few "laughing matters". The TI's were in your face all the time. I saw so many emotions coming from men that I have not seen since.

You build a good partnership with the other recruits and keep your nose clean. Don't try to outsmart your TI's.... won't happen and if they find out they will be all over you.

They literally tear you down as an individual and rebuild you to conform to a military life. I was raised in the AF and prior to basic, I never thought twice about seeing a colonel, general or what ever. After basic training, I had a whole new respect for these people.

I think the discipline is a good thing and the training I got was invaluable. I was in great condition when I got out and felt a lot better about myself.

I look back today and can literally LMAO at some of the things that happend during basic... even though it was hardly funny at the time.

It can be tough, but it's worth it.

The Air Force training is like any other Branch of service. They break you down and build you up into a new (hopefully better) person. It's what you make of it. They get you to realize your full potential physically and mentally. If you can't cut it, they cut you.
I personally think that Air Force basic is the easiest of all the services. You will become a better person just by going through the experience.

The best time to join is around February/March. San Antonio get somewhat uncomfortable in the summer... it's very humid.

The first 3 days of Basic are the worst and honestly the rest isn't all that bad. Yeah, you'll have someone breathing down your neck from 5am-9pm everyday, but really the TI's are quite funny since towards the end they have to come up with different ways to yell at people. I had a great time in Basic and if you just follow directions, pay attention to detail and like Sarge said be quit and don't volunteer for a damn thing you'll be just fine. Oh, in the morning stick with biscuits and syrup...trust me on that.

Forget Basic Training........it is just a very small part of your Air Force career. The main thing you have to understand about basic training is that Uncle Sam doesn't care if you can fold your underwear 4"wide.......he just wants to know that if he tells you to do it that you will do it. The Air Force was great......I was a fighter jet mechanic and I had a great time. I traveled all over the world and made some great friends..........If you are even remotely considering joining up send me an email.......I will answer any of your questions..........Good Luck
