If you could post a link to a picture, it would help everyone in trying to id the dog. Yahoo and photobucket have free hosting of pictures if you need somewhere to post a picture. Several dog breeds have beards, and it could be a mix of 2 dogs. If you don't know what it is, then you can't tell us it's NOT a mutt. A picture is worth a thousand words, so you'll get better answers if you can add a pic.

Where did you get the dog? How do you know he's not a mutt if you or the vet can't identify what breed he is? If he doesn't have papers and isn't of breeding quality, it really doesn't matter if he's a mutt or not. It does sound like a schnauzer or scottish terrier like some of the other people have suggested, but those are common breeds and a vet most likely would have been able to identify them.

Can you post a picture? Kind of sounds like it could be a Scottish Terrier: http://www.akc.org/breeds/scottish_terrier/ Or a Dandie Dinmont Terrier: http://www.akc.org/breeds/dandie_dinmont_terrier/index.cfm But if your vet says she doesn't know, it is most likely a mixed breed - there is nothing wrong with that. Maybe it is just part Scottie?

When I worked at the vet, many people would insist their mutt was some purebred - always gave us a chuckle! But, it seems important for some people to think they have 'accidently aquired' a purebred dog.

Giant or standard schnauzer mixed with a standard dachshund maybe? Probably just a lovable mutt! Whats wrong with that?

sounds like a mutt, if the vet wasn't sure. Us people in the veterinary field know our dog breeds, and when we said "I'm not sure", or "I don't know" we are simply trying to tell you in a nice way that it is a mutt...but allot of people don't want to hear it, nor do we want to offend the client...sorry, like stated before its probably a mutt...

It's hard to tell without a photograph, but if your dog has a little beard, especially one that looks like a bushy mustache, then your dog could be a Scottish Terrier.

Perhaps a briard , bearded collie, or polish lowland sheepdog.
Check out a dog breed book.
There are unusual dog breed books out there.
