I get offended because some fool who doesn't even know me has decided to pass judgement on me based on his own personal ideas of what his holy book says. I get just as offended by this passing of judgement on me as you would if I decided to hold you responsable for the Holocaust based on whether or not you "look German".
Do you get it?

I am offended when people tell me that because that is the other persons judgement. Not God's. (that is if there is a god) Regardless, we are not supposed to judge eachother. I try very hard not to judge people. I would expect the same from others.
Maybe instead of telling somebody that they might go to hell, it might be better to suggest that maybe they aren't doing the good moral thing to do and perhaps they should think about their actions more. I know that I would take that better than the, "You're going to hell!" that is so often said.

I can think of a few reasons:
1.Because Man wants to think he is always the master, never anyone else.
2. Yes, actions have consequences but those can always be delayed, right? Perhaps put off indefinitely?
3. If I don't believe in Jesus, He doesn't exist.
4. This is all there is, there's nowhere else, so obviously no punishment
5. (most frequent) No loving caring God would send anyone to Hell
Need others?
Hope this helps!

No, we're offended by the sheer arrogance of the person who says it. How the F U C K do you know?? All you know was taught to you by your brain washed daddy who was brain washed by his daddy and so on and so forth.
You people choose to delude yourselves about the nature of god? Fine, but when you start running around preaching condemnation and hell to sane people, they tend to get a tad pissed off. Your whole philosophy is based in fear. You're afraid to even question what you were taught as a child, because the angry old man in the sky is always watching and recording your every thought!! Hah!! You're already in hell, but you're too stupid to realise it......moron!!
If heaven is a place full of servile, self righteous, smug, finger pointing Christians, that would be hell for a lot of people who value freedom of thought.

this is the basis of the Christian Religion. the basic rewards for being good is that one will have a joyous eternal life while if one is evil then one will have misery through eternity. most of the ministers are saying " ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls you are going to Heaven or Hell. the choice is up to you which will it be ? " Really what a persons decision is should i enjoy the earthly pleasures now or wait until I get to Heaven to enjoy myself.

All liars, unbelievers and wicked will be destroyed in the final fire that comes down out of heaven. Read Revelation. "ETERNAL TORMENT IN HELL" is a myth adopted by early Christians from Greek mythology. This fact came to pass as Christians in Rome compromised with pagans. Most Biblical scholars admit this truth today.

Being told that you are going to hell is like being told that the color blue is red. I know it's blue. You're trying to convince me it's red. Eventually both of us walk away, shaking our heads, thinking the other is insane or simply deluded. Also...
The choices you are given in Christianity are colorless. Black or white. That's it. Stark. For many of us, me included, we find Christianity's lack nuance to be childish. We are adults yet Christianity only gives us the carrot and the stick. It lacks the subtlety of day to day human interaction and the degrees of that interaction - be they good or bad. Not only that...
But if you accept the idea that we all have freedom of choice, then I choose that hell does not exist. I am the creator of my own reality as are you. I respect your choice but please. Stop trying to convince my that my choice is wrong. It is right for me. Blue is blue.

I am offended when people attempt to push their religious beliefs on me. My religion does not have a Hell. There is no eternal suffering. I am heartily offended when others presume that their religion is the only true one & presume to judge my actions according to their beliefs. My choices never offend me. They are MY choices. And choices do have consequences, but in my religion Hell is not one of them.

Maybe for the same reason that creationists get offended when they are told that there is no god? Because they do not believe it. But, on the evolutionist side, they at least have proof to back up there theories. think about this-the religious people and how angry they will be when they figure out they spent all of this time worshipping something that never existed. days and days, months etc...
"I contend we are both atheists. I just believe in one less god than you do. When you understand why you deny all other gods, then you will understand why I deny yours."

I believe it's the consequences , I believe a lot of people want to live the way they want to without rules and still want to go to Heaven..It's easier to live a life of sin than ant other way for a lot of people..Hell is a word a lot don't want to hear and a lot don't believe..Your right though we all have a choice to where we want to spend eternaty but some don't want to think about it..
