I just want to know the pro's and cons, e.g. taxes, 'hidden charges' etc.

budd is right, as long as you are using a reputable source you should be OK. I purchased mine from the Meirin Sangyo Company in Japan. Make sure you contact them about shipping methods and charges, and you should consider insuring the shipment for your total cost so you don't loose out if something happens in shipping.

Directly from Japan....sorta.

I've bought Iaito and real Shinken from a store in Baltimore (Charles Street) that brings them in directly from Tokyo and the owner is Nihonjin (Japanese national) so he knows and certifies everything he sells.

But I've bought cell phones from Japan, the PDA I'm currently using for example...and the conversion rates from Yen (円 or the latinized symbol, ¥) to $$'s were clean and no hidden charges.

I think it largely depends on the dealer in question as well.

Aside from the shipping charges, you can face an import tax when the item arrives in the country. That is of course if it doesn't get impounded, which is a possibility. My advice would be to email the government and ask before you commit to the purchase or try and find a local retailer. Your teacher should be able to recommend someone.
