Depends on what you mean by alcoholic. What some would consider alcohol dependance others would simply consider a phase of heavy drinking.

My husband is an alcoholic, he quits for a while however most everyone drinks, even the advertisements on tv always show it.
If you are alcoholic and still drink you are only fooling yourself. That is like saying Im overweight but can I sneek twinkies? Come on! I know it is difficult to quit all togeather with all the subliminal messages to party you must have alcohol of some kind. Very few cases where a alcoholic can limit their alcohol permantly. It is to easy to get out of hand.

You can if you have a strong mind. A lot of times we think we can not do things, but that is not so. If you have a strong mind and you really want something bad enough, you will fight with every part of you do to it. The minute you make that first small step and others make a big deal of it because they are proud of you, you will be so excited and you will want to keep going. It is a mental thing. If someone said to you, if you give up drinking for good within a couple weeks, I will give you a million bucks. Believe me you will quit. Why? It is a mental thing. You would not say you can not do it, instead, you will say, wow, a million bucks!!! So, what does that tell you? It says, it is not impossible.

It depends on the person. A good friend of mine celebrated his one year of sobriety just a few weeks ago, and he never once attended Alcoholics Anonymous, or anything like that. If you have a strong support system, close friends and family, and you're honest with yourself, as well as determined to change, you can do it.

I don't recommend it, personally, as a formor addiction specialist student, but it can be done. Just remember to hold yourself accountable and don't put yourself in environments where you might be tempted.

Nope. An alcoholic cannot taper or wean themselves. They have to stop all together.

Just remember, people who are truly NOT alcoholics do not ask these questions about themselves. Only alcoholics count drinks, change drinks and try to control their drinking.

I would advise you get some help from a specialist. You will need someone who understands what your going through that will use tough love. It will take determination on your part and a made up mind. Don't try to do this alone. If you believe in God seek him in pray. I admire you wanting to do it by yourself but it's not necessary. You will be going through a lot. Everyone needs some one at one point of time. This is your time.

I guess it really depends on how bad you got it....

I have heard some people say that they bought the Busch "NA"
(non-alcoholic). You get the taste but not the alcohol. But maybe just downgrading slowly. From hard liquor to beer, then from beer to wine coolers, then from wine coolers to virgin beverages.

No, you can't "wean" yourself off. You have to just stop drinking, period. You may crave it, but you have to live day by day and choose not to drink each day.
