A futon or day bed is out of the question. It is an efficiency apartment and it's all one room. I will only be living there 6 months and I don't want to spend that much money. But I do want to make it as comfortable as possible!

Well, because it's a small space, the best way to specify areas is with area rugs. Dont be afraid to keep your furniture off the walls, You can start off with something that will accent the Hard wood floors. (Browns, Deep Oranges or even a Deep Blue) These colors will make the rug stand out on the Hard Wood Floors.
Then you could work around it to add to the room, Curtains that may go with the area rug you chose. Not too matchey matchey, You can get one that has a touch of the colors from the rug. You can accent the rest of the room with throw pillows. I dont know how handy you are but @ home depot they have these floating shelves that are easy to install and are cheap in cost, they have all different sizes. (even I can put them in). and their great for storing books, cd's, dvd's, or even to display sport items. If you like the idea try them in the Kitchen also, you can use them for cups and bowls or even spices. (assuming you cook) and they look awesome. As for the walls I think a great idea would be to take pics of your friends or even pics of the female/male body like the neck, the arch in his/her back, Hips, these are sexy parts of a woman/mans but without being pornagraphic, then take to a print store and have them make them Black & white or even sepia then frame them and there is your art work

First I'd buy inexpensive shelving,,,lots of it, and line the walls as high as the shelving will go. I'd also invest in an inexpensive love seat/sleeper sofa, I'd look into a cafe size round kicthen table with 2 chairs, as petite as you can find, and perhaps find that type of table with a fold down top. In the shelving
I'd have everyting I not only need, but enjoy, in a lifestyle,,,IE: entertainment, etc. I'd have the comp in that space as well.

6 months can seem a long time in discomfort, but for now,,,Less truly can be More"

If your budget is restricted try Walmart,,, Yuck, or goodwill, etc.

A good comfy couch that you will not mind sleeping on is first - other items should be able to pull double duty - such as a storage cube that you can put stuff in and sit on.
