There is a small public bus service in Hilo town that does run for FREE now, so if you could find a place in or near town(maybe even rent a room in a house)the bus could be a choice of transportation. If you were to join BJ's gym, it would be likely you would make friends and hopefully one of them has a car. try the classifieds for places to rent or go online and check out the Hilo Tribune Herald, our town's newspaper. Good Luck! Hilo is a small town, so walking may be another option.

Hi! I'd suggest looking in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald classified ads. Here's the link for houses (to purchase):

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/classifieds/?loc=detail&main=Real%20Estate#Homes_for_Sale

and here's a link to apartments, condos, and houses for rent:

If you were anywhere but Hawaii I'd suggest craigslist, but I've found that not that many people in Hawaii use the internet classifieds - so you're probably better off with the local newspaper.

Good luck!

I am not from Hawaii, but I am told that if you are a permanent resident they will give you some rental breaks according to law. For example Molokai I believe which is not really a tourist island.

What's your definition of "cheap" apartment or house? The first question any realtor will ask you is, "What price range is affordable for you?"

"cheap" from the perspective of someone like Bill Gates?
"cheap" from the perspective of someone like Bette Midler?
"cheap" from the perspective of someone like a CEO?
"cheap" from the perspective of someone like a bank manager?
"cheap" from the perspective of someone making 3x minimum wage?
"cheap" from the perspective of someone making minimum wage?

Lots of ideas for each one of the above
