Don't get me wrong. I sometimes laugh at them, too. However, I was just wondering if there was some underlying psychological cause. Any suggestions?

That is one of the best questions have seen in a while...I have no idea though...A burp is basically the same thing and it isn't quite as funny as a fart....maybe because it comes from a region of the body that is still hushed about, and the fart maybe reminds people that they are still animals and taking showers and putting deoderant or purfume on will do absolutely nothing to eliminate the stink. Although burps can smell pretty wrong too....

Physiologically laughter can be subcategorised into various groupings depending upon the extent and pitch of the laughter: giggles, clicks (which can be almost silent), chortles, chuckles, hoots, cackles, sniggers and guffaws are all types of laughter. Smiling may be considered a mild silent form of laughter. Some studies indicate that laughter differs depending upon the gender of the laughing person: women tend to laugh in a more "sing-song" way, while men more often grunt or snort.

On the other hand, laughing at somebody is considered to be ridiculing an individual, or as Alexander Bain put it, degrading some notable "person, interest or institution". Some consider this form of laughter to be the mind's way of "purging" negative, unwanted things and thoughts not of the self. For example, when a young boy sees another boy fall down, he may laugh because he knows that he does not want to fall down himself, therefore by "laughing" he is pushing the negative thought of falling down out of his mind.

Hi! No, there is not underlying psychological cause. The reason is because the sound is funny. We used to laugh at them because the sound its abnormal to hear as usual.

Same reason people laugh when someone slips on a banana, it did not happen to them. It could have, and laughter is the release of tension that says "Thank goodness that was not me!"

because farting is generally embarrassing for people so people laugh at people that do. Sometimes people that do the farting themselves laugh too so as to not be embarrassed.

I don't normally laugh. But I had to in an elevator full of people when somebody (not me!) let one go. Most of us laughed. Luckily it was a 'short trip'!

Sometimes, it's a nervous reaction.

Plus, it's funny. I mean, it's the smell and the noise, but none of the mess. Thank you, Mr. Carlin.

It is the only humour that is recognised in every single country / nationality.

Don't know why it's funny, it just is.

Maybe God has got a sense of humour.
