because I am way stressed out.He just last week precribed Zoloft for me to take along with my Xanax. My pharamisist filled it no problem.Since then I have talked to other pharmicists and they say those two shouldnt be taken together..I havent taken it yet, because I was having some tests done and didnt know if it would interfer. Whats everyones opinion on Xanax and Zoloft together? I dont know who to trust. I have been on antidepressents in the passt and Im sure i must have been on Xanax to,because i have been on most of the past 17 years, except when they had me on Klonopin years ago? Any advice?

Hey, if you're questioning your doc's judgment, go get a second opinion - especially if you've been with the same doctor for 17 years and s/he's not a psychiatrist. I can't speak to these drugs, but do know that there are situations where anti-anxiety and anti-depressants are prescribed together.

Xanax and zoloft are okay together. One is an anti anxiety agent, the other an anti depressant. They treat different problems. Neither should be stopped abruptly as you will definitely go through withdrawal symptoms. But if you truely want to stop the xanax tell your doctor and he will instruct you in a taper method to discontinue it. 17 years on xanax is pretty long, but if it works, so what? Just DON'T STOP IT! That would be both dangerous and fool hardy. Your family and friends wouldn't want to see you suffering.

If you are way stressed out, then maybe you should trust your doctor. You know yourself, but he has seen slews of patients like you and some better, some worse. If you don't trust him then get a second opinion.

If this is about control know this, that you and your doctor are a team. He doesn't start you on anything without talking to you and seeing you first. You shouldn't make your own decisions about stopping the medicines without his input.

Think it all through carefully. The decision is yours. Hope I've been able to make your decision clearer.

Many people take Xanax (alprazolam) and Zoloft together. You usually see anxiety and depression together so this is an effective combination.

You doctor probably did not want you to stop taking Xanax because you must wean yourself off of it rather than stop suddenly. You will have big problems if you have taken Xanax for 17 years and stop suddenly.

It never hurts to give your doctor a call just to make sure you understand his directions.

Also, be aware that Zoloft will not start working immediately. You will not see much effect for a couple weeks so hang in there with it.
Good Luck.

Both these medications are used to control anxiety. Xanax is mostly prescribed for anxiety/panic disorder, and Zoloft is an SRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitor) that is chiefly used to control depression.
My advice is to call your doctor and tell him about the pharmacist warning. He prescribed the medications, so he should be able to tell you why it would/wouldn't be safe to take them together and what symptoms he believes the addition of Zoloft will ameliorate.
