My Husband and I have been married for 5 years, and we have 2 beautiful little girls, but we've decided that 2 is definitely plenty for us (both physically & financially). Unfortunately, I have some major health issues and my Dr says if I get pregnant again, it could kill me. I can't have surgery to have my tubes tied because it's too risky with my health issues. My husband has volunteered to get a vasectomy, since it's a much less invasive procedure, anyway. He's called several doctors, but none will do it, because they say he's too young, or he doesn't have many kids. One doctor said, "Oh, he's only 25 with 2 kids. If he were 30 with 4 kids, it would be different." Since when do they get to decide how many kids we have? I know that they're worried about him coming back a trrying to sue them if he wants it reversed, but he has offered to sign any and every form saying that if he ever wants this reversed, he will pay for it. They will still not do it. Is this legal?

Do have your tubes tied, a woman has to be 21, the legal asge, and that's it. Could this be considered discrimination because of his age? No one seems to have a set age at which they will do the vasectomy.

Also, I cannot have an IUD because I'm on Blood thinners, and I can't use birth control pills because of previous history of pulmonary embolism. And, our first child was conceived while we were using a condom (that didn't break). So I don't really trust those 100%

I have explained the situation to the doctors we've talked to, but they just suggest stuff like, condoms, and birth control pills (even though I've told them I can't take them). It's like they just don't listen. One dr's secretary said that they are worried about guys getting it done so young and then when they want it reversed and don't want to pay for it, they sue the doctor. Again, My husband has told every doctor that he will sign any forms or papers to say that he will not come after the doctor and if he wants this reversed, he will pay for it. I just don't see the problem!
I appreciate all the thoughtful responses.

I am appalled that any doctor would refuse surgery to him. Please discuss your problem with your OBGYN and hopefully your doc can give you a reccomendation of someone who will do it.

How dare they refuse...it is an elective procedure that should not be stepped into lightly, however they should understand the situation that you and your husband are in.

Good Luck...my husband goes in next week for his.

Keep trying. Make another appointment to see another urologist and explain to the doctor that you have some major health issues and that having another baby could cause you to die and that he is doing this to save you. There has to be someone out there that will do this for you. Take copies of your medical record with you to his appointments so if the md wants proof then you have legal proof.

Your doctor could do it for him if he really wanted to.

If your husband wants to go to a different doctor (than yours) then try having him go in for a check up and developing a relationship with the doctor and then asking. Someone, somewhere will listen to him and do the surgery.

Good luck to you and your husband. I am sorry to hear about your health problems.

since many vasectomies can be reversed, I dont see why the drs are having a hard time doing the procedure.

I agree with the first poster... keep looking. You will find someone who will do it. Has he explained the situation to the doctors he asks?
