I am cutting calories/portion control. I feel weak when using the weight machines. I am 40 and somewhat "out of shape" Will increasing protein help me tone/build muscle?

protein aids in muscle repair, so definately make sure you get enough before and after you work out.

Make sure you are eating enough. A lot of people take portion control /calorie cutting to an extreme. Really, you should only be cutting about 300-500 calories off of your maintenance (what it would take you to not lose or gain any weight) each day.

Also, you will probably be happier with the results if you focus on each of your goals individually. I would say tone up your muscles first (and don't be too alarmed if your weight goes up a few pounds. Muscle is heavy) and then try and lose the weight. I think you'll like the person looking back at you in the mirror better if you do it that way.

Protein will help to repair muscles after you work out, so you can eat lean meats like egg whites, fish, or chicken breast. You can also consider a protein supplement like protein whey that you can buy at the store. A product like Designer Whey is pretty good....pure protein with few carbs.

It sounds like you need an energy kick when you're at the gym. Some people drink some coffee or an energy drink (caffeine) to give them that boost before working out. If the weights are too heavy, reduce the weights you're lifting. You should be able to do 3 sets of about 15-20 reps without straining....but you want to try to "feel the burn."

After a few days of working out, you start feeling better.

Good luck!

Protein is essential for you if you are actively working out so make sure you are getting plenty of it either through food or supplements.

If you're feeling I weak then you probably need more calories in your diet. Try eating extra fruits and vegetables during the day. That way you'll have more energy and you will not damage your diet plan.

Hope that helps

Yes, and you may also want to add some "good carbs" whole wheat, fresh vegetables to your diet. Also, a piece of fruit about 30 minutes before your workout could give you that little boost you need.

Often when starting a new diet/exercise plan people fail to realize they are burning more calories than before and adequate nutrition is just as important as portion control, drinking plenty of water, and exercise.
Good luck with your fitness goals.

I have found that too much protien makes me feel bloated & hurts my stomach which in turn makes it hard to work out. i feel that drinknig lots of water & healthy whole grains is a great way to get you up and going...plus add some multi vits.
