I'll be applying for a graphic designer job in Vancouver, how should I dress at the interview?

What you wear depends on the type of job you are applying for, also the kind of company it is. For example, you wouldn't wear suit/tie if you wanted to be a grave digger or jeans/tshirt if you wanted to be a bank manager so use this as your guide. Check out the graphic design company - are they young and trendy or an established older type of firm? Research what the other employees are wearing. Maybe take the middle road - jeans with shirt, tie and jacket. You need to feel comfortable or you won't conduct yourself to your full potential.

In this day and age, employers expect applicants to have done some research about the company, and this includes knowing the "dress code." Being overdressed or underdressed is taken as a sign by many employers that the applicant has not done a sufficient job in researching the company and doesn't understand the position being applied for. So the best bet is to find out how others dress in this position for this company, and to dress just a bit better (as though you have an important meeting). For some companies, this would be suit and tie, for others just slacks and a dress shirt, and for example, if you were going into an industrial position, it would still be nice jeans and a pull-over shirt.

Suit and tie is preferred. Listen to everyone when they tell you that "first impression" is key. Even if you are not required to wear a suit and tie at work (like as a graphic designer), dressing up will make a very good impression.

By the way, I am also vice president of one of the world's leading PR agency in San Francisco. I interview all of our graphic designers personally. First impression counts!

A good alternative to the shirt and tie in a more casual office is the turle neck. Wear it with a nice tweed suit jacket and well tailored chord pants. If you feel overdressed you can slip the jacket off and get down to business. If you are going to be in sales or supervision/management;
dress shirt and tie are a must and new suitable stylish shoes are always noticed (no straps, metal or real high heels) with conservative belt to match the shoe colour. Your smile, presentation, politeness and job knowledge will overcome minor flaws in dress, especially in Van.

I would dress up. Even if they wear jeans to work, you can't go wrong dressing up. You want them to know this job is important enough for you to dress for it. If you don't want to wear a complete suit, you could eliminate the jacket and wear a really nice shirt and tie.(with dresspants, not jeans) I would pick a colorful shirt (solid colour) as it is for graphic design and you want to show some creativity.

Wear the suit and tie or you could wear jeans if you wore a shirt and jacket, skipping the tie. Good luck getting the job.

Even if the entire office is casual dress in jeans, you should wear a suit to the interview. I assume you'll be showing some of your work; make sure to include photos of you working in jeans if that's the way they dress.

You only get one chance to make a good first impression. Go there booted and suited, clean shaven and immaculate. You will impress even if there is a relaxed atmosphere regarding dress code within the workplace. If you feel you are overdressed and the interviewer is dressed casually, after the initial welcoming, politely ask if you can remove your jacket and loosen your tie. That will get you around any embarrassing differences..........
By the way, good luck.............

I agree with Erica...do some research on the firm. If they tend to be a more casual atmosphere I would suggest khaki pants and a high quality "golf" shirt, though without a logo. Jeans are a little too "comfortable" for an interview.

Good luck, I hope you get the job!
