I've got a 2 year old Belgian Malinois that insists on treating our cats litter box like an all you can eat buffet. We keep it cleaned daily but she still manages to sneak a snack between cleanings.

Litter crunchies are a favorite for dogs, and I don't quite understand why. The only thing you can do is outsmart your very smart dog (I work with the breed occasionally) and keep her out of the kitty litter buffet. You may want to get a product from Petsmart that prevents animals from eating their own feces. I cannot remember what the product is called, but ask a store associate for it, and tell them your problem.

I worked for a vet who recommended using the seasoning "accent" or monosodium glutamate and sprinkling the cat food with it. It won't change the taste of the food, but somewhere between eating it and expelling it, a process happens that makes the fecal matter bitter (glad I'm not the scientist who discovered this). After a week or so of this, the dog should learn a bitter lesson. If the dog picks up this yucky habit again, just repeat the process. Good luck.

yeah, our dogs did that too. i dont know what you house is like but for us we have this dirty little room in our basement where we keep the litter boxes. then we put a cat flap in the door and we always keep the door shut. it worked for our big dog but we also have a dog that is the same size as the cats. the room the litter was in also has some spiral stairs going down to it that the cats use, but the dog is afraid to use it. adding a cat flap would be the easiest if you have a dog that is bigger than your cats though.

Easiest answer is to put the catbox where the cat can get the but the dog can't or won't go. We have ours in a room that we also have a localized invisable fence signal that keeps the dog out of that room.
