The cars you have listed are ok, but if your looking for fuel economy there are better solutions. Naturally a good selection would be the Hybrids from ford and toyota. The are a little pricey to buy up front but in the end you will save alot of money in the end. Some other cars would be VW's and even the Yaris.

I would recomend 3 things...
First, ONLY buy a car that you can pay CASH for. Cars go down in value quickly and payments stink!
Second, DO NOT buy a car that is worth more than 50% of your annual income. If you do then Depreciation on your car will eat up too much of your income!
Third, Add another GREAT small car to your list. Go drive a Ford Focus! They look good, are very reliable, and get better gas mileage than all the others on your list by a bunch! up to 37mpg on the highway! Also, the Ford Focus was on Car and Driver Magazines 10 best list for 5 years!

My current car is a 98 Ford Escort Wagon that has been great for 138,000 miles so far...and I plan on buying an 07 Ford Focus Wagon in a few years. I always let some other Sucker take a 40% beating on their money by purchasing at least 2.5-3yrs old. Heck, they lose 20% when you leave the dealer parking lot!

UPDATE: I mentioned the Focus because it is available in Wagons which I love due to the added Hauling capacity when I go shopping! But if you are looking only at Coupes and Sedans, you cant go wrong with the NEW Chevy Cobalt! 34 mpg on the Highway, great looking, MUCH better quality than the old Cavaliers which it replaced... AND it got the Insurance Institute for Highway Safetys Highest Rating! in the Front AND Rear Crash tests!

I would recommend the Toyota Corolla, they are very reliable cars with several option packages available. It is a small 4 door car with a good look.

There are car reviews you can look up on web sites such as www.edmunds.com, caranddriver.com, autoreviews.com and autobytel .com to name a few. Plus i would take one for spin and ask the dealer for references if you go there first.and if you buy used test drive, ask lots of questions and also look up carfax.com for any real car problem issues.
