You are lucky that you are so young and could probably eat anything without consequences. It sounds like you have a good metabolism. That having been said, if you know you are an unhealthy eater, why don't you make an effort to improve your diet? I am not saying you should completely cut out all of the junk food, but eat it in moderation as part of a sensible diet with fruit and vegetables included?

The smoking is just plain bad and will likely kill you. As for the drinking, a little booze in moderation is not the end of the world.

The number one thing you can do for your health is to quite the smoking.

Everyone knows smoking is bad...blah, blah, blah:
Yeah but here is why:

Smoking has chemcial compounds that can cause damage to your cells of your lungs. Actually not just the cell, but the very inner part of the cell that holds the DNA, called the nucleus.

DNA looks like a twisted ladder. Imaging on one side you have the hand rail of the ladder, and the first "step" of the ladder on the left hand side is one chemical. On the right hand side of that same "step" is another chemical attached to the other hand rail. Each "step" on the ladder has another pair of chemicals.

These chemicals are really important. There are only 4 chemcials (think of them like "letters"), but the order they appear in writes the "sentances" that make up your genetic code.

You have 6 billion of these pairs of lettes making up your genentic code. When the news talked about the "human genome" this is what they were so excited out.

SO WHAT?
So smoking...

-Smoking comes in and *BREAKS* steps in your ladder and instead of reaching across to the other rail, it reaches above to bond to the step above it.

(For science people this is a Thymine-Thymine dimer. )

Well now you have a "kink" in your ladder. So the parts of your cell that "read" that DNA to make things? They can't function. Whoops....

Luckily most of the time our bodies are able to "self destruct" these "Cells gone wild"...but

It is a % game. Like russian roulette with a big gun. You might be able to play for years and years, but then eventually a one cell sneaks past the fence.

Then every cell *that* cell makes has the same broken DNA. Guess what - BAM!, thats cancer.
----

And yeah you do need to eat vegitables. Especially if you don't quite smoking. Smokers need the extra vitamins and antioxidants plants give you.

Talk to a doctor or nutritionalist about rehabing your body. You don't want to be huffing and puffing in basic.

The best thing you have said is that your going into the armed forces! Discipline is what you need and your going to benefit from it.
But at your age you won't be effected by your 'BAD" diet, but down the road as you age, you will be sorry that you didn't pay attention to it.
Prevention is the best medicine - so wake up!

You may be quite healthy now -- but you are abusing your body, and you won't feel that great when you're my age (35). Take care of the future you!!
