My husband only has one sister and I have one brother...we are going to get our new baby baptised and both feel that his sister and my brother would make sense being the Godparents. How do I deal with my best friend who is like a sister to me that she isn't going to be?

Honestly is the best policy

Explain what a difficult decision it was, and you want nothing more for her to be in the lives of ALL your family members, and that the choice was not easily made.

If she is your very best friend, she will be supportive and understand that the choice you made was yours to have made.

It is more than common to choose relatives before friends so in all honesty, she shouldnt be upset - she should understand this is a general custom.

You can lighten the conversation by saying she can be the favourite 'aunt' the one who feeds your son or daughter junkfood then sends him/her home full of sugar and takes them shopping and is the one they tell there secrets too... which will mean far more to the child =)

Best of luck

tell her that it is only right that your sister in-law & your brother should be the godparents because they are related to your baby, if she doesn't like the idea there's nothing she can do about it & if she's a true friend then she'll understand.

I had a similar problem, I had to talk to my best friend about my other best friend who will become my sister in law being the maid of honor at my wedding. Her and her brother (my man) are really close, and I couldn't leave her out of it, her son's the ring bearer and everything. So I had to tell my best friend that in order to be fair to his family she wouldn't be able to do it. If she's a true friend she'll understand. She will still be auntie whatever and get to spoil the child.

The role of godparent is a lot of responsibility. They would be the ones caring for your child if anything happens to you or your husband. Just tell her you would want family to raise your child if anything ever happened to you. She will understand its not to hurt her feelings. If she doesnt shes not much of a friend.

My niece had 2 God-mothers. Or,explain to your friend that she is your best friend and sister all rolled into one,and you regard her as your baby's No 1 auntie, much more important role than a God-mother.

You don't tell her anything. You let her ask. Then you tell her that the sister was picked. If she's your frined she will be happy not mad.

She should understand that you want this position to be had by family. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
