like if i order something from a restaurant togo?
yes i tip for togo orders. I work at hooters on the weekends. The togo spot on the floor chart is usualy assigned to a person on staff for each shift, and it is when the manager wants you to be togo, you are togo. Anyway...... togo only gets 2 table sections for the shift. Meaning if you have the togo section you are handling all the togo orders and you have a 2 table section throughout your shift. Guess what i get paid hourly for togo????? $2.13 an hour. And with only 2 table section with actually tipping customers i would make crap. Luckily there are nice people out ther that understand that i have to get your food done.I have to check it to make sure it is right, i have to bag it, I have to box it sometimes, i have to get your condiments... etc......... and you are stuill getting the convience of not having to cook, and i am still doing work for you. So YES YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TIP THE TOGO/TAKEOUT PERSON!!!!!!
Just think about it this way...... what is an extra dollar or 2 for your food? It could very well make their day, and you might get a free drink or something else out of it next time.

Nope. My gas, my car, no tip. This was a question a few weeks ago and there were as many opinions as their were people posting. Several people (most were prior servers or hosts/hostesses) said you should tip because they have to take the order, bag it, run to the kitchen and add any extras or things that were forgotten. I'm still standing firm to my no tipping rule. If I spend my gas $$ and wear and tear on my car plus my time to pick up food, I don't give a tip for sticking it in a paper bag. Sorry.

I'm a rather generous tipping for the most part and usually err on the side of caution. I just have no justification for tipping for takeout...unless someone is very convincing otherwise.

No. The only way I tip for something like that is if it has been delivered and I tip the driver for his service of course. I've seen those 'tip cups' at the registers for take out and often wonder why they even have them there. If it was a sit down restaurant or meal where I actually received services of a wait person then I tip.

For everyone who said "no, I'd NEVER tip" consider the following:

A server makes money by tips. Typically they earn under minimum wage and the restaurant only has to pay additional if their tips don't add up to minimum wage.

On a busy night servers can make decent money by giving good service to their tables and turning them over quickly so they can get more tables.

Typically, restaurants have their servers put the finishing touches on to-go items and take them up to the front. While it might not seem difficult, keep in mind the server has multiple tables that probably WILL TIP. If he or she is really busy, preparing a to-go order and taking it up to you is taking away from time better spent with tipping customers.

So if I go to pick-up food on a busy Friday or Saturday night, I'll tip a buck or two, because I know the server had to take time away from better paying tips to get my food ready.

As the preparer, I've only gotten tipped a handful of times. The one that sticks out in my mind was a rather large order, and it was because family had just flown back for a funeral and nobody wanted to cook. I got a $20 tip just because of the convenience! But it is rare.

Absolutely not !! And I refuse to eat where they add on the tip to the bill... A tip is something you give voluntarily for good service...NOT something the server should expect.

I use to waitress so I tip very well generally, but shitty service screams shitty tip! Just because the restaurant industry pays crappy doesn't mean all the customers are suppose to boost their paychecks. Most certainly no tip is needed for "carry out," for you had no service at your table ! Happy eating !

If it is in a real restaurant and the server puts everything together including utensils..then yes, a buck or two doesn't hurt anyone.

Only when they bring it to my car. I usually tip them a dollar.

If I pick it up, no way. If they deliver or do curbside, then yes, I give a small tip.
