Yes, it happens. That's why your doctor should have told you about taking the mini pill. It's birth control that's safe for breastfeeding women.

Yes, it is possible to get pregnant while still nursing.

If your baby is under 6 mos of age, nursing frequently on cue without supplements, and your period has not returned then breastfeeding alone is as effective as condoms for birth control. This is ONLY true if ALL three conditions are met. The likelyhood of getting PG in the first 6 mos of breastfeeding is pretty low if ALL 3 conditions are met. (Not impossible....but not likely either.)

You can certainly get PG while breastfeeding pretty easily if you aren't meeting all three of the above conditions. I did it twice. :-) My oldest was 16 months old and still nursing when I got PG with my middle child. BOTH of them were still nursing (age 14 months and age 3 yrs 3 mos) when I got PG with my youngest.

See the links below for more info on breastfeeding and birth control methods, LAM and nursing through pregnancy/tandem nursing.

Oh yes. One of the first things the nurse told me when my daughter was born, "Breastfeeding does not equal birth control."

For some reason that quote just stuck in my head after that.

Once you stop bleeding from the birth, it's possible to get pregnant.
