My homemade tomato soup does look red. The
dark red Detroit Tomatos or Ruby Reds.. make
nice red tomato soup. However if you use tomatos like beefsteak they won't be producing much red cause they are hybrids. If you want red with out coloring put a wee bit of beat juice in it. It won't change the flavour it will just give red colour to your soup. I do that only when I'm stuck with beef stake tomatos usually in the winter time. Ruby reds and Detroit Reds are not long keepers they spoil quickly! So you now know it makes a difference of what type of tomato you use!
You can cheat and use those packettes at grocery stores but they are often filled with unhealthy chemicals and cancer causing dyes
that I don't recommend! Grow your own tomatos in acid rich soil. Get seeds from www.rareseeds.com

Its because food manufactures fill the food we eat with colourings and preservatives which makes the food a different colour.
Its also to do with the fact that most people wouldn't eat tomato soup if it didn't come out the tin red because in the eyes of most people tomato's are suppose to be red, so in turn tomato soup is suppose to be red.

Most of the color in a tomato is in the skin. Companies that make tomato soup discovered that the 'Cream of Tomato" soup turned out a sickly pink when they added the cream, so they added artificial coloring to increase the eye-appeal. You don't need to do that when you make a bowl of natural, healthy tomato soup, because you see the fresh ingredients as they go into the steaming pot and the rich aromas stimulate your palate without the red coloring.

Cooked tomato is yellow or orange. Commercial soup is full of red dye - and less tasty.

Because manufacturers add food colouring to theirs, while the orangey hue is au naturelle in the home made one. Try adding some tomato puree. It thickens it anyway.

because foods are coloured to look artificially red. homemade is natural. you could put tomato puree in to deepen the colour. but its not that important. its what it tastes like.
