My son will be staring Pre-K next year (fall of 07). Does anyone know where I would go to find out what schools in my area offer Pre-K? He'll have to switch daycares too so I'm wanting to get a head start on this stuff because he'll have to be in a different daycare by this coming spring. Thanks for your help :0)

The daycare he's in now is considered a learning center and he's already learned so much! He really wants to start school. He's actually a little upset that he couldn't start this year (his birthday falls after the cut-off date) I've looked in the phone books and stuff but I can't seem to find a good list of all the Pre-K's in the area. All of my friends and family have little ones that are younger than mine so they're no help either.

Call your county board of education and they should be able to tell you where the classes would be offered. They will also let you know when to register as sometimes there are long lists and even waiting lists..Let me just say as a previous Pre-K teacher, he will not get nearly as much education as you think. The state funded program was never intended for people who have money for educational toys and such. It was established for the large number of students entering the school system from poorer families and non english speaking families to teach them socialization skills and common words and phrases. You can do your son a lot of good by going online to get extra activities for him to do as implementation. Ask the County office if you can get a copy of the expected skills for kindergarteners to know and work from that as to what to help him with. Good luck. If nothing else, he will have fun interacting with other children in small groups.

Where I live pre-k is in the elementary school which means it is the one you are zoned for. Head start offers a pre-k too I think. You can find a number for the local office of Headstart or Big5. Ask around at you daycare - someone there may know or call the main office for your school district. Hope this helps. Good luck. Those classes fill up fast and many start enrollment around April so you are wise to get a jump on it now.

In my area there is no pre-k offered within the public school district, however there are two private, religious schools and ECFE. If the same is true with your area, you are wise to get things rolling now so that the pre-k classes don't fill before your son is registered. I think that you best bet would be to go down to your local human services office, they usually will have lists of all licensed daycare providers within your area and a list of preschools also. Best of luck.

I would call the schools that are close to you and ask about the Pre-K, but I think every school has to offer it. I may be wrong. Then I would ask the date of sign up, and maybe put his name on a list. My friend's daughter didn't get to go to Pre-K because the class filled up before she tried to sign up. So you are good for trying to do things early. But then you'll just have to wait until the date they give you... sometime in Aug. (I remember how exciting it is when they first start school -- for you and the child. Mine are 6 and 11 now) Have fun!!

All the 10-odd mothers advised you correcly to look out for a neigbourhood school. You haven mentioned that where he is at present he has learned quite a lot and is in fact eager to go to a regular school. The pre-school and also you are really being unjust to the child. The development of brain takes its own time and it is not advisable to burden it with rote so early. The concept of numbers has not yet developed in the brain and even the child can rote the numbers mechanically this does not mean he has understood them. I am always insisted on pre-school not to teach anything to my child. He has his entire long long in front of him/her for this.

Check the other schools around your area they should have some information about preschool programs in the area, or ask other parents with children your sons age.. Seems like ages ago when my son went to pre school. I think I cried more than he did the first day...

Check with your local school district. Some offer free preschool and others offer preschool that you have to pay for.
Call your local school district's board of education and they should be able to help you.
For instance my school district offers free preschool to families meeting certain criteria. They gave us an interview and my daughter got accepted. It didn't even matter how much money we made or anything.
There are also preschool programs for those children of low income families or children with problems with such things as speach etc.

Call the city board if you are with in the city, call the county if you are in the county.
If you live in the south it's always better go send your children to the county schools, so if possible enroll him there.
Pre-k and hand in hand here is about the same. but it's a part of the school system. so locate and ask them.

Call the schools that are closest to your home. Park Districts usually have all day Pre-K.
