My Vet has told me NOT to give my dogs rawhide. Choking is a hazard, and rawhide can cause gastric irritation when dogs chew on it often. Gastric irritation can also cause vomiting and extreme discomfort in dogs.

If you’re going to give your dog rawhide, then offer it in limited quantity, and throw away the small chewed-down pieces. Consider the pressed rawhide that is made up of tiny pieces of rawhide and “glued” together with a gelatin base. Always watch your dog carefully for any adverse reactions.

I think the choking issue is a concern if you have a smaller dog. We have a yellow lab/charpei mix and she eats rawhide and pigs ears at least once every day. She is still young (about 3 years old) and so would chew on everything if she could. The rawhide helps control that. Also, we have never had her choke or throw up due to the rawhide. Obviously, she is a rather large dog (about 80 lbs) so if your dog is very small, that may be more of a concern.

Good luck.

raw hide is good for their teeth and helps them not chew on your furniture :) however, it is recommended that it does not get wet or left out in the rain. Bacteria grows on raw hide very quickly and can make your dog sick. Outside, bugs and mites are also known to be drown to raw hide so be careful to just keep an eye out on it every now and again to make sure it still looks healthy enough for your little guy.

NO!!!!!
many dogs have been autopsied with large chunks still in their stomachs...
since raw hide IS undigestable it can be a serious problem.. I am not saying the rawhide killed these dogs, but having anything take up space in a stomach that shouldnt be there impacts on the dogs abiltiy to digest properly...(smaller pieces often pass through their system)

additionally some dogs choke on peices if they dont chew it properly - especially the knobby ends on bone shapes or the ball shaped peices

some is "bleached" so it looks white to appeal to pet owners - do you want your dog eating something that is bleached???

If you wanna give your pet a great treat>>
You will need a food dehydrator, a sweet potato, an apple-decorer, and a piece of 3/4 inch rope--about 2 1/2 to 3 feet long.
Cut the sweet potato up in 2 to 2 1/2 inch pieces, leaving them in the round form.
On the exposed ends, cut a hole with the apple decorer.
Place all pieces in the food dehydrator, until done.
Put pieces on rope, tying a knot between each piece, and on each end.
It's totally nutritious for your dog, and he/she'll love it.

Raw hide is fine for dogs, it is not good for puppies however, and can cause serious condions such as bloat in small dogs and in puppies, and with all thing moderation is key, a better alternitive is velvet pressed treats. They are a hassle to clean up though, but much healthier for the animal.

I DO NOT give my dogs rawhide. It presents a choking hazard as well as other intestinal complications. Busy bones are a great alternative and please do not give your dog any of the chicken or turkey jerky they are selling now. I gave a piece to one of my dogs and he choked on it and had blood running out his mouth and nose. Luckily i was there and was able to get it out of his throat but not before it cut his throat and caused the bleeding.

I think they are not good for your dog. I use to buy the flavored rawhides for my dogs and they would stain my carpet and also would not digest very good in my dogs system. My dogs would throw them up in pieces. Also I read where you aren't suppose to handle them with your bare hands for some reason. Please research this in a doggie guide.
