The general is asking the members of NATO for more troops. Unfortuantely, many members of NATO have lost the balls to do anything. They complain about what the terrorists are doing, but are afraid to respond. The US and the UK can't carry everyone.

When NATO stupidly agreed to take this mess off of the US hands, they were told it would only require some 15,000 troops. So each of the big countries ponied up X number of troops each. Now in a classic bait and switch they are told that it is going to require an extra 2200 troops. I(n 90 days it will be another 1500 and on and on.) Accept for Farnce and the UK most NATO militaries are defensive forces without the ability to project power. Plus as the body count rises the Afghan adventure is becoming increasingly less popular in Europe.
They are finding out what every invader since Alexander the Macedonian has found out; conquering Afghanistan is easy holding it is hard.

you have no idea how many troops go to iraq each year. to everybody they're just numbers, but thousands of soldiers deploy all year on a monthly basis. yeah it's an important war but i don't think it's necessary to send that many soldiers out there to die. i wish everybody could spend 1 year tour in iraq or afghanistan then come back and talk about sending troops out there. it's not pleasant.

Look at where we have troops all over the world, and you wonder how come he is not getting them? USMC is recalling discharged personnel that have been out up to 6 yrs.
Our military is stretched out WAY to thin.
Troops in Iraq where only supposed to be there up to 14 mo. some have been extended to the point they have been there almost two years. Plus the pressure to start withdrawing, from Iraq. Let Israel fight there own war for a change....time for the USA to stop being world wide baby sitters and take care of our own problems we have here at home.
The Armed forces are hurting as far as personnel goes is why he is not getting any more troops.
Plus most of the US population is tired of our young people being killed for no apparent reason.

We're too preoccupied with Iraq, a war that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the War on Terror, but was the war that the Neocons were itching to start for several years BEFORE 9/11. We should have just stayed in Afghanistan and done the job right.

Because we supposedly "won" the war there. Even though the Taliban s now running 1/3 of the country. Opium production has resumed at an even higher rate than before. Karzai is President in name only, he's really nothing more than a glorified mayor.
It's all about Iraq now.

That's a NATO operation, so the NATO allies have to dicker over who has to send troops.

A lot of them died thanks to George Bush. Also the military is overstretched right now and preoccupied in Iraq.
