While I was stationed in the gulf, we went to Bahrain for our R&R, one of the more tolerant places in the middle east, not much to do there, but at least we weren't getting shot at and could get a mixed drink.

Most military members on R&R just go home. Depending on mission, most are allowed 15 days of R&R. Their round trip is paid for. It's always better to go home and see family and friends then get shipped off to some spot the military might see fit.

My hubby and some buddies went on R&R in Tikrit in one of Sadam's palaces. There are many places to go, it depends more on where they're stationed in the first place.

When you go on R&R DoD will fly you anywhere in the world for free. They won't let you stay in theatre unless you stay on the base
