Does anybody remember ELITE (comorode 64)
A space flight sim game where you fly from planet to planet selling and buying goods for a profit (drugs and gun running always the best return, but a high chance off having to dump your load when the police gave chase).
Amazing game which I have never been able to find anything close

Quake2 - It was realistic while at the same time had an essence of surrealism.
It was great for single and multi-player gaming. You could develop your own levels and character skins.
It was simple yet the gameplay was fantastic!
Mortal Kombat - Another classic, not your regular beat-em-up, there was more to it that just fighting and provides good food for your imagination.

This has to be one of the most subjective types of question - it all depends upon what sort of games you like to play, your age, peer pressure and, to some degree, your gender!
I am a mother and like games such as Monkey Island and CSI. Also things like Lemmings.
My son (13) prefers games I do not understand and therefore could not name most of them (though I am very good at pretending about being interested!!!).
My daughter (7) likes games such as Zoo Tycoon - even though she has no idea what she is doing! And things like Pokemon (her brother helps her with all the games - thank heaven for my son!!!). The latest game that she plays (obviously my son just plays with her so she does not get stuck!!!) is Harry Potter
