People who name-call overweight folk have no single constructive idea as to what causes the problem or what to suggest as a remedy. It is down to pig ignorance - hardly likely that your friend would get a possitive response if he/she asked the offender what best to do about it.

So many people who devote their lives to dieting still have a problem, or the problem has returned.

As for a proper approach? If your friend is interested, I can put him/her on to a real authority on the subject. Incidentally, we work with a reasearch and development company and a scientist who just happens to be THE world leader in the science of Glycaemic Indexing and ProBiology (the clever boots has 7 degrees to his name too!).

Your choice. Take care now .......

I got it right through school, no idea why I was overweight either as we didn't have junk foods in our house, developed depression and then comfort ate and developed bulemia. I still get evil little chavs calling me names in town but I ignore it now as they are not worth the hassle.
I go to weight watchers and have lost loads so far and I have started to believe the fact that I am beautiful. Make sure you tell your friend that she is too, everyone is, beauty isn't just an external thing.
The people calling her names are just childish and are diverting attention from their own problems because they are insecure and probably envious. I know it can hurt at the time so make sure you stick by your friend, support her and reassure her.

You are both unique and beautiful!

I have been called a pig, a hippo, disgusting, I have been told that there is a weight restriction when I have been qeueing to go into clubs, elephant, everything that you can think of really. You learn to tune it out after a while. I actually got myself into the mindset that I feel sorry for these people. If there is something so wrong in there lives that they have to make a complete stranger feel bad they deserve my pity. And I am a fit size 14/16 as I ride horses.

Yes and the best way to stop it is to get rude and nasty right back. I don't care how old the person is.

I find it very annoying when parents allow their children to point and make fun of fat people. Then stand there looking STUPID. The bastards don't bother to say anything then have the nerve to get mad when you get nasty back.

And stupid adults work my nerve too young and old.

Works every time If everyone was meant to be perfect we would all be in heaven.

Beside some rude nasty people would find something else to tease you about.

My answer get nasty right back. And show no emotion while you are doing it.

I was raised to think that I was fat...my mother was constantly putting me on diets, telling me not to eat this or that, and when I told her I'd outgrown an outfit (we're talking under age 13 here) she would say "You just need to lose weight." My father was obese but the rest of us were normal weight, and my sister was "the pretty one".
This created a complex in which I saw myself as fat, and eventually became so because I just gave up the fight. After my father's death my older siblings all became obese.
A few yrs ago my sister gave me some photographs of myself as a child (school functions etc) and I see that I *wasn't* fat, at all! Just very tall and big for my age. But for some reason I was labelled "fatty" and "chubby"--perhaps because I believed it.
Now in my 40's I do have a weight problem, but it isn't severe (only about a stone) and I refuse to let my appearance define my personality. I do hope to lose some of the excess but not at the risk of my integrity as a person.

if some one is only a few pound over weight thats fine, but if it becomes a health problem, for example not being able to walk and breathe, etc then it IS too much then.

its hard to lose weight if you are oveweight, but there are a few things that can be done, without going over the top about it.
sure, fat people get remarks, but its best to ignore them, as the weight is worrying to them (the people who pass the comments), even though it has NOTHING to do with them, they should mind their own business, and most of the time, they are not perfect themselves any way, and havent got a right to say anything!
sometimes i see people who are oveweight, but i would NEVER comment like that as it is SOOOO rude!

Oh yeah, I have been called names my entire life.

My choices are:

* let it bother me
* accept the fact that I can't control other people's actions and don't let it bother me - Live and Let Live

So, you may be fat .. so what .. your physical body is no reflection on what kind of a human being you are mentally and emotionally. People that pick on overweight people feel the need to put others down to build themselves up. Not the kind of people I would want to spend time with.

Good Luck to you!

I'm not overweight but the way I look at it is it's me that has the problem in not accepting people as they are on the inside and not what they appear so I keep any problems I have with overweight to myself

I am not over weight but my husband has called me fat @rse for the last 3 days, yes I do think its rude, and obviously she is not perfect and I'm sure you could think of many things to comment on about her appearance but you're a nice girl, so rise above it

Just a few months ago my nephew got mad at me and called me "fatty fat fat. You're just big and fat". Obviously, I wanted to turn this THIRTEEN year old over my knee and wail on him, however, I started a diet instead. I'm not fat anymore and can't wait to see him again. Boy is he gonna get it. LOL! It is rude and it's very hurtful. Overweight people really have to develop a thick skin.
