Well i know i received the HolyGhost back in january of 2005,and the one thing my pastor told me that helped me while i was praying is this...when you go buy a pair of shoes your not buying the tongue of the shoes, your buying the shoes and tongues come with it,so when your praying for the Holyghost dont pray to speak in tongues it can be distracting, all you have to do is believe and receive the Holyghost and the tongues will come with it.

P.S. some ppl do speak in tongues in there sleep when there having a dream about God,or something of that nature

I think you're confused about what tongues really is and about what the Baptism of the Holy Spirit really is.

First of all, not all Christians who are Baptised of the Holy Spirit speak in tongues. See 1 Cor Chapter 12 and notice that in verse 30 the rhetorical question is asked "Do all speak with tongues?" which should be answered (along with all the other questions in that verse and the one before) "No." Also see 1 Cor 13:1, where someone who speaks in tongues without charity (or love, depending on the translation) is not viewed favorably. and 1 Cor 14 says that the best spiritual gift is prophesy, and that those who speak in tongues are not as good as those who prophesy.

And even at Pentecost, notice how in Acts 2:8, the tongues were not random babbling, but the tongues of the men who were visiting Jerusalem.

I see no reason to doubt that the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" was a single event poured out for the Apostles to establish the Church. The only time I find that language used is when they are talking about Pentacost. From that time, it seems that the Holy Spirit is passed on to new believers through the laying on of hands.

First off, the term "baptism of the Holy Spirit" is a misnomer, for nowadays you only receive the Holy Spirit throught the acceptance of Christ. The only time the Holy Spirit came long after that would be in Acts 2, because Christ hasn't sent the Spirit yet.

The ability to speak in tongues, if taken from the context of the New Testament (specifically Acts 2: 4-12, other references found in 1 Corinthians), would be the ability to speak in a different language without prior study of the said language.

"And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language." - Acts 2: 6

Thus, the only way to prove that you are truly speaking in tongues is to have someone be able to identify the dialect you are speaking in. If we take verses 7-11 of Acts 2, it would also show that speaking in tongues only occurs where there are people who can actually understand the dialect...

There are also many regulations with regards to the "speaking of tongues" found in 1 Corinthians 14: 1-25, most of them not observed by certain churches that claim to practice "speaking in tongues." Regardless, let it be known that speaking in tongues is not a requirement of salvation (as opposed to the claims of some churches), nor is it actually taught or trained (again in opposition to these claims). If God were to give this gift now, it would be at a time when it is most needed and would have the most impact. Instead of actively seeking this ability or of other "great" gifts, it would be better to concern yourself with your own salvation and the practice of Christ-like living...

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." - 1 Corinthians 13: 1-2

It could be that your waking mind has a little doubt that could be holding you back. Remember, it won't happen magically...you have to open your mouth. Some people learn to speak in tongues like a small child learns to talk. One word at a time. Others just burst forth in line after line. It is a mystery only God can understand. Next time you are praying discuss this with God and ask Him to help you. Then just be quiet for a while and let it come naturally. Whatever you hear, repeat it. The more you repeat, the more you will hear as you are trusting God completely when you do this.

I would say NO.

First....dont desire the Baptism for the tongues.....desire the Baptism for the connection with God. YOU will know when the baptism happens. You have the right understanding about your spirit is freer....but not in the sleep mode....

Look at it this way,,,God spirit communicates with your spirit....because we are spirit-man. Understanding that our flesh gets in the way.....So learning to give EVERYTHING to God in prayer....allowing God to have everything......sin, and more than that.....having your body as a living sacrific.

Heres the way someone explained it to me.....
Its like being in a dark room, no windows, no lights. You have a light, but cant find the outlet where to plug it in. You grope around (in the dark) with your hands looking for the outlet.....then when you find it...you plug in the light and there IS LIGHT.

When i was searching.....this is how it was explained to me....

I now understand....just bask in the Lord and dont worry about the tongues.....having the connection with God is the important thing....when you plug in the light...the tongues will be the effidence that you have tapped into God.

Also, read the book of ACTS.....this will help as well. With the Baptism you gain "power over Satan"....so understand with the baptism comes responsiblity.

Hope this helps you..God bless

If you asked for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit you have it. There is not any one emotion or experience that any 2 people will have when they are Baptized.

Somtimes "Tongues needs a little "jump start" like the next time you are with others who are praying in tongues say a little of someone elses tongue just to get you started. You might only say a single nonsense word(seemingly) at first but as you relax and let the Holy Spirit take over it will evolve and change into something beautiful.

I recently lost my wife, I loved her very much. I have recently been hit with anxiety and panic attacks, I felt frustration, I felt something was missing, so I decided I would ask God for understanding and comfort, after about 5 or 10 minutes of praying my words started becoming jumbled and mixed, I felt so passionately about what I was praying I felt something come out of my mouth, I couldn't understand, I didn't fight it for some reason, I felt like I should raise my hands to God and continue, and as I did this I felt an overwhelming feeling, undescribable it was like being happy but wanting to cry, not a sad cry but this feeling like having a friend there with you to comfort you. I don't believe spaking in tongues is something we can or should practice. if you have to practice it then it is not of God. I believe if you are speaking in tongues without trying to then it is more for god. speaking in tongue is a very personal experience between you and god. I don't think it is something that should be used to show off in front of others. because if it is then it is pointless and not real. there is a quote in the bible I cant remember the verse or book but it was jesus I believe who said it....he who does a good thing in private will be rewarded in heaven, but he who does a good thing in public eyes has his reward.

Please consider the following scriptures.

Simply it stated that what good is the gift of tongue, if it is not being understood. Who is being edify if the spirit is not understandable?

6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
(New Testament | 1 Corinthians 14:6,9)

13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
(New Testament | 1 Corinthians 14:13,14)

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
(New Testament | 1 Corinthians 14:27 - 28)

37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

(New Testament | 1 Corinthians 14:37 - 40)

The meaning of tongues in the bible means a forgien language. Tongues was used to witness to the lost in Acts 2. Its not a heavenly prayer language. Cause if it was why would you need a interperter. Please I urge you to study from Acts 1 all the way into 1 Corinthians what it really is. Do not go on traditions of men and what you think you have seen, but study the meanings of the word tongues by using a greek dictionary. A concordance will help you learn those meanings.

I used to attend this type of Church, so I do have some experience here.

You probably won't want to hear this, but God gives you the gift of His Holy Spirit upon salvation. Speaking in tongues, the way most Charismatics do it, is not biblical. In the Bible, folks were able to understand the speech as though it were in their own language. Paul said he'd rather you say one intelligible word than 10,000 in "tongues."

I firmly, honestly believe with every fiber of my being that you don't need to do this. However, if you do it I'm not judging you; it's not from the devil or anything.

By the way, most people in their sleep speek only gibberish. Your brain is speaking English, but your mouth is only relaying portions of words.

You don't need to "free your spirit" to worship God. Focus more on Him and less on you (no offense intended). Thanks for your zeal and love for the Lord.
