I am worried that since Sutton is in zone five, the cost of my rail card will be very high. Sutton is only 8 miles from where I live but will the traffic be horrendous?

get the train. it is easier on the environment and probably your stress levels as you will avoid the traffic, rude driving, difficult parking etc.
i lived in the area near clapham junction for most of my life (arding hobbs changing to debenhams etc) and worked in sutton for a while too. i took the train personally as it was chesaper to buy a season ticket and that way i could use it when i wanted to travel elsewhere on the the train for 'free' at weekends etc.
also the cost of your season railcard will be from point to point ie, clapham junction to sutton. it can be used around the destination and departure points (zones) but your charge will be less all things considered.

Personally I would suggest the train, as you can get to Sutton from the Clap in just over 20 minutes on the Dorking Train. There's also a train that goes express to Sutton.
I can't imagine to drive being a) desirable in rush hour or b) taking that little time.
If you're worried about the travel card, you could get off at one of the unmanned stations, not show a card then take a bus to Sutton. There's enough of the stations that you could probably get away with never needing a Zone 5 (until they install Oyster EVERYWHERE).

If you are close to the station, and can stand the crowds as at peak times trains from Clapham to Sutton are packed, then use the train.
As for ticket prices, suttons underground zone shouldn't matter, you will be getting overland trains so will be able to travel on a normal network card.
PS: C ock & Bull in Sutton used to serve just about the best pint of London Pride you could find anywhere in the country.
Unfortunately not been in there since I moved away from the south east so it may have changed.

Train infinitely better than driving. Driving will take for ever and you will arrive at work very stressed. Not to mention petrol and parking costs. I used to commute in from Sutton and the train service is not bad compared to many routes, whereas driving through Streatham is hellish..And you will be going against the flow by commuting out, so will get a seat.
If you want to save money you could get a prepay Oyster card and use Northern Line to Morden and then get a bus. But that would take longer. Hopefully Oyster card will soon extend to Sutton BR station.

Congratulations on your new job ! as you live near a major rail interchange with good connections to Sutton - go by train.
As you can see the journey by train is brief but you need to explore the most cost effective method to purchase a ticket, however I hope that you will be earning a decent enough salary to afford the ticket!!

The convenience of your car or perhaps the not too packed carriage of a train against the main rush of commuters coming into London. If you have free parking, drive. If you don't want to purchase a travel card, purchase a 'rail only card' as my babe does. You'll save plenty cutting out the LT middleman, unless you do need to use the tube & bus. Do facta in the possibilities... 'sorry for the delay, the wrong type of leaves are on the line' or 'snow if London's ever cold enough for it.

It may be only eight miles but the traffic will drive you potty. Take the train and then you can have a couple of pints after work.

take the train you can get one straight there from clapham junction if you drive your never find a parking space

its easier to catch a train but its a more expensive way its far cheeper to drive to sutton 8 miles in petrol is nothing but on the train is abit more then petrol ............
