Look at it this way....no matter what number X represents, one "thing" minus the same "thing" is always zero. (Have one orange, take away one orange, what have you got? Zero).

4x minus 4 x = 0x = 0

Try putting x= anything to prove.

If x = 9

4 times 9 minus (4 times 9) = 36 minus 36 = 0

x by this equation right now does not have a definition. It could be one or it could be 3256 however the answer would still be 0. You can check by assigning x any number and solve the equation. It will always be 0.

Unless someone with more mathmatical knowledge knows something I don't.

4x is translated as 4 times a number x, so it is a whole unit. When you subtract 4x-4x, you get ZERO.

it would be 0. X could be any number. The point is that you are taking 4 times a quanity and subtracting that exact same amount. X could be a billion, but it would be 4 billion minus 4 billion.

0; any number you substitute for X will be the same; and number minus itself = 0

You're not simplifying, you're answering. That formula equals 0. It does not matter what "X" equals... it will always equal 0.

It will always simplify to zero if x is positive.
