At least one site suggest there's nothing wrong and gives the reasons why the area increases in size.
One word of caution from a common sense view I would suggest tho is if u are scratching to the point of damaging the skin then there will be a larger area for any subsequent infection too invade.

When you scratch a mosquito bite the swelling goes up because you're pushing it further in to your skin and it spreads.

Yes, you could infect it more....when a mosquito pulls its little sucker out...it has a substance come out that irritates you.... you add more aggervation to the area by scratching it thats why it welps up and gets bigger....so it's better not to do it....and Ol' boy is right this is a pointless question.

i would advise you to scratch it enough to break the skin and then dab some malt vinegar onto it to stop the itching so you wont need to keep scratching it
it will sting for a moment but that sting takes the itchiness away

Instead of scratching, use Afterbite. It looks like a pen and stings when you first apply it, but that just means it's doing its job.

Yes, you'll infect the bites - you should buy an antihistamine gel to treat the bites so they don't itch at you. You can keep it in the 'fridge & it really helps.

yes DO NOT SCRATCH THEM. THEY WILL TURN INTO SCARS. i have one. if they itch take your pointer finger and mark an X over the bug bite that helps. good luck!!
p.s. you can also get anti-itch cream from about any drug store.

yeah, you tear your skin when scratching. cuz, poison is injected into the skin from the bite.

You can get an infection and it gets larger because you are ripping it open.

yeah, you probvably shouldn't. buy some lotion or cream to tend it but try hard not to ich it or it will become worst and irritate the skin more.
