I cannot understand why crimes of violence here in the u.k are not treated more seriously, because to me if you are going to carry a knife it is the same as carrying a gun both can, and do kill, should we increase the maximum term of imprisonment from five years and follow the american system of say, five to twenty five, that way the offender will have to prove they are sorry, and what restitution should the criminal give to the victim and/or family.
This crime really is on the increase here and needs to be sorted out give them five years mandatory just for being in possession, please tell me your views.

I think that there should be a mandatory sentence for carrying a knife for sure.
I believe that if you are carrying a weapon, then you would use it on another person, why else would you have it?
The intention is there is potentially cause an injury or even murder somebody then you should be dealt with in a stern manner.
If the system was not so easy going on these crimes then people may think twice about the decision to carry such items.

nicely, isn't knife crime significantly better than gun crime? If the guy at Columbine had a knife, he might want to have killed 2 or 3 human beings fairly of 20 human beings. If someone assaults you with a knife, you may wrestle again and the percentages that you're going to live on are really sturdy. If someone assaults you with a gun, overlook it, you're useless. And besides, the homicide fee contained in the united kingdom (by employing any approach) is about 4 circumstances decrease than the U. S.. So this is compared to knifes are utilized in crimes over there almost as a lot as guns are used contained in the U. S..

I'm sympathetic, but have two points to raise about punishment just for possession. Firstly, I often carry a multi-tool, with screwdrivers, pliers, file, bottle openers, and ... knife blades, because I find it useful so often, around the house and garden, out on a country walk etc. Wouldn't be great for stabbing someone because the blades don't lock, but nevertheless it could be a lethal weapon. My point is that sometimes people are carrying knives for perfectly good reasons and mean no harm to anyone. Secondly, people who are carrying knives as weapons, for offence or defence, are doing so because of their attitude of mind towards other people, if they couldn't carry knives they would just turn to other tools, screwdrivers, chisels, skewers, whatever. Would we need a permit to carry any object that could cause someone injury? That's not practical. It's not the knife that's the problem, it's the purpose in mind. And who can tell what that is, until an injury is actually inflicted?

I"m absolutely livid the way Law and Order is going in this country of ours. People in possession of knives, whatever their age should be locked away for a considerable time. The do-gooders say prison is a learning centre for criminals and they will only get worse, well if they do, lock them up again. Any government that had the "balls" to say they are going to tackle this problem by putting 2 Pence on Income Tax, build more prisons and end this culture that has grown over the last 10-15 years will have my hole hearted support. I would suggest a survey of the British public would also agree.

Maybe if you folks hadn't disarmed the law abiding over there, the knife problem wouldn't be so bad. Funny how after the first 6 months of the total ban on private ownership of guns in the UK, gun crime had gone up 300%. Guess what they say is true. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Now you want to outlaw knives, when will you morans wake up. Criminals by their very nature do not obey laws. Hell, the Brits even hate people to defend themselves from attack. I remember when Britain was tough, now their spines are filled with pudding.

I am so sick of this country. I have a seventeen year old son and we live in Hackney East London. He now wants to carry a knife because of the amount of times he's been held up by boys with knifes and they take his mobile phone, money, bus pass and even his house keys.
I think if they carry a knife then they should be punished. They are only carrying a knife to use it.

5 years for possessions sound like a plan, 10 -15 for using any weapon.

cut the puss y footing around in this country and give representative penalties that people will either respect or have long enough to think over their actions before their release.

Prison should be returned to hard labour not the easy ride it is now, doing time should be feared not laughed off as a holiday.

I agree with you the laws of this country are too soft.Violence is on the increase and nobody is doing anything to stop it.Innocent people are being killed or injured and yet they dont get any justice. It is scary to think of what this country is going to be like in ten years time.Yes they should be given a prison sentence to carry any sort of weapon means in my opinion that they are pro-active and do have the intent to use it.

So, lock up people buying kitchen equipment?
Lock up men in kilts, simply for wearing a sgean dubh?

You've got fists, haven't you? Best turn yourself in.

Carrying a knife is NOT the same as carrying a gun. Carrying a gun in a city is clearly for one purpose, shooting other people, whereas a knife has so many more uses.
How many people can use a knife as a ranged weapon?
