Old newspapers are excellent provided that they are DRY. Wrap the pipes in as many layers as you can, even up to an inch 25-30m.m. After wrapping the pipes you must protect them with plastic sheeting, any old sheeting is OK provided you tie string around it to keep it in place. As the pipes will be inside you don't have to be as particular as if they were outside.
In UK they make specially moulded foam rubber tubes with a horizontal split for "Jumping "on to the pipes

Wrap alternate layers of strips of rags and paper - cheap and effective.
