Do you want a silent dog or a dog that only barks for a reason....such as the UPS guy is here? All dogs bark with the exception of a few rare pariah dogs and most toy breeds are known to be "yappy"! Just like people, dogs have different temperaments.

To say that all toys bark a lot is canine profiling. I've had toy breeds all my life and some have been yappier than others, but they can be trained to not simply bark at the wind. I've never had a Shih Tzu, but I take care of several yappy ones and only one quiet one. I also care for some large breeds that bark more than toy breeds.

Although not a toy breed, the quietest dog that I have ever personally owned was a Boston Terrier. In fact, she was the best dog that I ever had. She had not one fault and lived to be 13 years old.

Right now I have poms and one very obedient toy rat terrier. When my RT barks, I listen because there is always a reason for the bark. My neighborhood has recently turned into Gangsta Land and I am glad I have an early warning system. She's the best watch dog I have ever had.

Actually, I've had a Chihuahua who rarely ever barked. He was taught early that is was not acceptable. Poodles can also be taught to not bark. Yorkies and other terriers are a little harder, as they were bred to be "alarm" barkers.

But for naturally quite toy breeds, Pugs and Italian Greyhounds are your best bet. They are just not barkers, and both breeds make wonderful pets for the right person.

I have also had Chinese Cresteds, and they were not yappers, but again, I think it was training, but they were alot easier to train than other small breeds I've had.

Be sure to really research any breed you are interested in, though, to make sure it will fit your life. And don't forget to check rescues, many of their dogs are already trained!

The Dogs come from a lineage of Wolves, Fox and Jackals and were subsequently interbreed by humans to meet their requirements. However, in the wild the first and basic instinct to communicate and to warn was through barking which could not be altered except in the Basenji Hound. Small dogs always tend to bark more due to insecurity, as any one and every one is larger than him. A comfortable and secure home/environment and discipline will stop the dog from excessive barking.

The Basenji does not bark at all .
The Basenji is one of the most ancient dog breeds. Originating on the continent of Africa, it has been venerated by humans for thousands of years. Basenjis can be seen on steles in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, sitting at the feet of their masters, looking just as they do today, with erect ears and tightly curled tail.

this breed won the best dog at cruffs, a couple of years back.

Lhasa apsos are also pretty quiet. Although I do believe most dogs can be trained when it is appropriate to bark or not. A dog obedience trainer could probably help you with this the best.

A great, quiet little dog is the Chinese Crested dog. It comes in a hairless version (I have one, there great) and a version with a full coat of hair called a "powder puff". There great ...energetic and playful like a dog...yet calm and quiet like a cat.

lyondrker... no... Basenji just scream (when a normal dog would bark) and sound like a small child being beaten.

I think long-haired dachshunds are pretty quiet
