I believe that compulsory conscription should be brought back for constant youth offenders. The good old short, sharp, shock treatment never fails. However the only downside of this would put the onus on the armed forces to control people who may have a complete dis-regard for discipline.
Maybe the workhouse could be resurrected again and the constant youth offenders could be employed in real mind numbing work like repairing fishing nets or cleaning potatoes before they are bagged? Bore them into submission!!!

While I am a believer in National conscription that doesn't address your question. I wouldn't wait for them to become constant or repeat offenders. On being found guilty the first time it should be one of the options open to the judge. Obviously there would be some totally unsuited for military service and they could have a detrimental effect on our forces. Others however could go on to be useful members of society.
I was a constant young offender but, at the age of eighteen I joined the RAF. The first six months were hell but I went on to serve 16 years.
A bonus with your suggestion is not only does it take these youngsters out of the environment it would improve the unemployment problem.
I think if it was known that this could be the sentence for a first offence there would be no need for Asbos because even the more socially unruly parents would realise they could lose their children one by one unless they brought them up to respect others and society in general.
Excellent idea.

Someone said:
'Eer... Filling up the army with criminals? Giving weapons in their hands? No, thanks.'
As the Duke of Wellington said of the British Army at Waterloo.
'Ours is composed of the scum of the earth—the mere scum of the earth.'
The Army then was composed mostly of people who only took it as a last resort, the very poor and the criminals namely. Yet they still beat old Boney and despite how they started out they had been disciplined and in battle they were bloody good fighters.
He also said 'I don't know what effect these men will have on the enemy, but by God, they terrify me.'
Now, any of you watch Bad Lad's Army? Proof there that the rigid discipline of the Army can straighten these people out.
'Why should the armed forces have to spend time and effort trying to accomodate children whose parents and / or schools havent bothered to educate and socialise properly.'
So your argument is that their parents and schools haven't straightened out, so the Army shouldn't bother either. What the hell? These people are a burden on society, they really need to be straightened out. Yes, it's the parents fault but this is one of the most constructive thing that can be done with them.
'yes bring back national service.Thats whats wrong with the yoof of today. Many have problems communicating ,even saying something as simple as 'Hello.Nice day isn't it'.Even that seems to stretch them beyond all comprehension. So send the little shits off to war and see how they grow up when they're not having their arses wiped for them'
I'm fifteen and, may I add, I can spell and punctuate.
'However the only downside of this would put the onus on the armed forces to control people who may have a complete dis-regard for discipline.'
They'll learn to respect discipline or they'll get beasted. And the Army's beastings are bloody harsh. That's how the Army works, it doesn't take any bollocks. Again, I refer to Bad Lad's Army, they had no respect at first but they ended up alright under the rigid regime of discipline and punishment.
'No. Green spaces wher children can really play and proper supervision should be brought back.'
Yes, because that'll stop them being naughty...
Where I live we have plenty of fields and parks, some right next to the council estate, yet the people from there still invariably end up as rotten chavs. There are other causes.
Yes, I agree. Maybe even national service for all school leavers in one way shape or form.

I do in theory.
Only trouble is the military would not want to take on these types of recruits.
Perhaps Compulsory Community Conscription - like cleaning out the loos at old folks homes.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Come on lets be honest what are these kids going to do otherwise & proven to do otherwise? Standing there intimidating a kiddie with a hard stick big belly & four walls with sky & a social worker is soooo wrong approach. This approach fundamentally benefits the egos of others without concentrating on the kid. The army concentrates in making an individual better & greater than they are regardless of who they are by breaking them. To then solve their problems & confront their weaknesses.

Why not go the whole hog and bring back National Service that way all people when they turn 18 years of age will have to do 2 or 3 years in the armed forces, it will sort 99% of them out and teach them to respect others.

Why should the armed forces have to spend time and effort trying to accomodate children whose parents and / or schools havent bothered to educate and socialise properly. granted it will probably be better than sending the offender to jail - but surely thats a criticism of the Prison Service / Home Office. Social workers will be about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
