So I was diagnoised with hyper thyroid last week, along with high blood pressure. The Dr. put me on a blood pressure pill that helps eliminate water on the body, (though keeping the potassium in my body) which has helped and I feel great. My problem is , even though I have been diagnoised with hyper thyroid I have had a weight problem all my life.

Wouldn't you think with the hyper thyroid.. that I could lose the weight instead of gaining it? I have now been watching what I eat and I keep a journal and I am mabey eating about 1200 to 1600 cals a day and drinking about 8 glasses of water.

My question is how do I help take this weight off with hyper thyroid? With out the use of diet pills, or any other unhealthy way. Are there any foods I should avoid? Any foods I should eat?

I am concerned for my health, which I should have been years ago... I just hink about my girls... I want to get healthy!

The Dr. doesn't seemed too concerened to put me on any thyroid medicine, she is more concerened with getting my blood pressure back to normal. She thinks that the blood pressure meds will help the thyroid issue. I had an extensive blood work up done and everything checked out fine except the thyroid.

People who are diagnosed with hyperthyroidism ,tend to have an increased BMR(basal metabolic rate )i.e that is an increased energy requirementn for your body to carry out its normal functions. As a result they need more calories for their normal functioning. If they eat less calories that their requirement, then they will loose weight,

But if on the otherhand they eat increasingly above their calorie requirement they can still put on weight.

The typical clinical symptom-Is an increased apetite with weight Loss.

People with Hypothyroidism tend to put on more weight.

Regarding foods-Some foods especially the Goitrogenic foods like brussels sprouts, rutabaga, turnips, cauliflower, African cassava, millet, cabbage, can act like the antithyroid drugs propylthiouracil and methimazole in disabling the thyroid function, so they should not be eaten in large amounts by someone on thyroid hormone replacement who still has a thyroid. It's thought that the enzymes involved in the formation of goitrogenic materials in plants can be destroyed by cooking, so thorough cooking may minimize goitrogenic potential.

You haven't mentioned whether you have been started on antithyroid medication for your hyperthyroidsm.

IF you are hyperthroid and want to loose weight,

1)Confirm your diagnosis-TO be hyperthyroid You lab results should show an increase in T3 and T4 hormone level.

If you are Hypothyroid your TSH willl be HIGH.T3 and T4 hormones decreased.

2)Be on the right medication to prevent you from over eating due to an increased apetite from hyperthyroidism

3)Replenish you diet with fresh fruits and vegetables.

4)Have fresh fruits as a snack.

5)Low fat, high fibre diet with fruits and vegetables.

6)exercise- Do Something that you enjoy(waking1/2 an hour - 1 hr)every other day

As u have diagnosed Hyper Thyroid, i think you better first take treatment for hyper thyroid, Because the small thyroid glands will push u in a danger corner in future, This thyroid glands will nill the calcium from Ur blood, skin then Finlay from bone, so Finlay there wont be strength in Ur bones, so weight u can reduce if Ur healthy, so its better to take a treatment for hyper thyroid,

excersise 30 minutes a day and you will keep any extra weight off. I started walking a year ago and I lost 16 pounds. Might sound like nothing but it makes all the difference in the world. It takes us years of putting on the weight. usually 10 to 15 lbs a year. So just take it one day at a time and tell me what happens after a year.

Well, you need to be on Thyroid medication too. You need to cut out sugar, breads, pastas, etc., and eat more protein. A high protein diet keeps your blood sugar balanced and will not crave sweets. Join the weight watchers, as they have meetings and weigh you in every week. You are not as tempted to cheat. They have good suggestions and menus. You need the medication too, so ask your doctor. Get your parathyroid checked too, he will know what it is.

It sounds like you are seeing a GP for this. Ask for a referral to an endocrinologist -- one who *specializes* is thyroid disorders (other might specialize in diabetes, etc.). Don't let your family doctor talk you out of getting a second opinion! It's your health, not your doctor's.

Weight loss is only one symptom of being hyperthyroid -- not everyone gets every symptom.
