Agree with you 100%, anyone who takes the life of an innocent person either by hit and run or drink driving should be banned for life, they have taken a life and their punishment should be a ban for life, its just disgusting how they get away with it by a slap on the wrist and a driving ban for a few years or maybe a languish in jail for a couple of years, the life's of the people they have killed will never have a life again will they, neither will the loved ones they left behind to try to carry on without them.

Hit and run drivers should be treated the same way as anyone who attacks a person with any other deadly weapon. If someone dies as a result of a hit and run why shouldn't the driver be prosecuted on a murder/man slaughter charge? why should they get away with dangerous driving and a 4 year sentence! A car at speed is a dangerous weapon and the driver should be held accountable.

Too right. Hit and run drivers and drunk drivers should never be allowed to drive again. Too bad we cannot cut their feet off. Problem solved.

Yes i totally agree. It angered me the other day to read in the paper of some idiot boasting about his new fast car he'd bought only a year after killing a girl because of his stupid, careless driving. People like that should be banned for life from driving. They should actually be jailed for life too, with life meaning life and not just a few months, or a small fine. A common reflection of so called 'justice' nowadays in our sad society though.

There appears to be a presumption that the hit and run driver was in fact negligent. While this is often the case, in this question, the failure to report a motor accident has been clouded with causing death by dangerous driving etc.

As a motor insurance underwriter in a previous employment life you would be staggered at the attitude of these scumbags when they've been caught and dealt with judicially. In my opinion it is heinous and the penalties levied are never reflective.

Hit and run = 'tuff s**t pal I don't care coz I'm out of here, and if I don't get caught I'll have no problem doing it again!'.

Fine them, lock them up and endorse their licence with something that will hit their future premiums to make driving financially prohibitive!

I think anyone who drinks n drives and hit n run drivers should all serve a hefty prison sentence, My mums friend lost her son to a drink driver and has never got over it, and that was years ago. Its bad enough somebody being hurt in an accident but when morons who do these crimes it should be classed as pre meditated especially drink drivers.

I think that sentences should always be left to the discretion of the courts, as only they are in a position to take into account the exact circumstances of each individual incident.

For example, if you are 1% over the drink drive limit and were stopped in a random check whilst driving perfectly normally, should you have the same punishment as someone who is 500% over the limit and caused a pile-up?

Yes for "hit and runs" and "convicted drunk drivers"
Though I think the first category is the worst offence!

Hit and run drivers should be gassed.

Drink drivers should be charged with attempted manslaughter banned from driving for life.
